Google Product Search
« on: November 05, 2010, 06:45:09 PM »
"Google Inc. is upgrading its shopping site as it steps up efforts to compete in Web comparison shopping, a move to become a key player in a market dominated by sites like Amazon.com Inc. and eBay Inc."

"...adding features to its separate service for shoppers, Google Product Search, that, among other things, will make it easier for users to look for soft goods like clothes"

"The image-recognition technology used to deliver those features for the Google shopping service comes from Like.com, a comparison-shopping site Google purchased in August that has a 'visual search' feature."

Sounds like Google Place Search except for products.

that would solve a problem for me right now, actually. Although by the time it rolls out here I hope to have beaten the developer into submission and actually have decent content in the feed. It willl be interesting to see how well it works though.

>> Google is also interested in rolling out the outfits feature to more retailers, according to a person familiar with the matter. Doing so would give Google data about apparel combinations customers enjoy, and it could in theory use that to suggest to its own users which items go well together and where they are available for purchase.

so Google Personal Shopper next?

The problem is that if it's anything like G Places it crowds the top of the serp so badly that you're going to have to go ppc. Organics are essentially displaced.

(it's starting to dawn on the outside world)

Google, These Aren’t Really The Best Answers For Users. They Are The Best Answers For You.

Is it just a coincidence that the top seven links in a row happen to be businesses with Google Places listings (which you can see by clicking on the Google Places links on the right). There is hardly any room on the all-important first page for any natural results below.

and Bingo!

No wonder other SEO-friendly local listings and reviews sites such as Citysearch, TripAdvisor, and Yelp are up in arms about this favoritism. They are being muscled out of their previous cosy spots by the search engine which makes all the rules.

Jeeze, Not sure how they can do successful outfits.  I find in hard enough finding related trousers for jackets. Simple enough, except that you have to see the items together to do it.  You cannot do it on composition and colour, as the finish is so important.

Try putting some tweeds and a cord together, and it does not work. Cotton can work really well with wool, but ah.. I think there will always be a place for the personal touch.

Rupert man.  I have to say, you dress really well!  Most geeks go for the "loose jeans" and t-shirt with a joke nobody but other geeks can understand.

Ha!  That's not me dressing, just my customers :) We get some corkers on the phone.
