https://millionshort.com/  It's been around for 6 years or more.  Looking at their videos, it appears they have their own crawler and, I assume, index.  If so, it must be pretty large because in my limited quick test for "science Fiction" the results seemed pretty good.

Million Short lets you peel back (remove) the most popular websites in increments: 100, 1000, 10K, 100K, 1 million by popularity and get to the obscure stuff.

And speaking of obscure stuff: the genealogists really like this for finding stuff about ancestors AND finding living relations, something they say Google is poor at.

I need to test this more, but what interests me: 1. that they may have their own index/algo and it looks fairly good and deep, 2. this is useful for getting past the usual players for a search.  On #1 that could be very useful in the future.

Hmm... not at all clear. They make a lot of comments like this one from 2012

but in the months since May it has decided to pivot its full attention onto the search space — it has even developed its own search technology for a more standalone experience separate from Google.

It looks like they started out just using Google results and now supposedly have their own search, but it's not clear how much is their own and how much is piggybacked.

We're focused on features that aren't available at all on other search engines, in addition to improving the basics. A lot the innovation revolves around giving users much more granular control their results with filtering. We are also working on better ways to deal with fake news and to push people outside of their usual filter bubbles to discover new points of view. We are working actively on a search for kids, parents and educators. We also have some more experimental and thought-provoking features planned.
