PPC Campaign Creation at Scale
« on: July 01, 2011, 11:35:03 PM »
We're getting deeper into the business of PPC now (this historically wasn't our area of focus) and since we've proven the business model it is time to scale it up

I know some of you guys are heavy into PPC

Are there any specific tools you use that are helpful in scaling the creation of lists/ads/campaigns?

I have a tool set designed to work with adCenter and Adwords desktop for bulk uploads and bulk price earnings optimization, but its geared for direct linking with affiliate network URLs.

Not 100% sure of your skill level and your actual goals but excel + adwords editor can go a long way.

You can basically replicate or create an entire campaign/account in excel and then import it and upload it through the tool.

My move is to do all the grunt work and setup on Adwords, then create an account at MSFT. Get into their "quickstart program" and they import the entire thing for you.

You could look at an off the shelf tool like SpeedPPC. PPCBLog.com also has some bulk tools.

Indeed, Excel can be a very effective tool for PPC - we set up an enormous AdCenter campaign when it launched ages ago (1.3 Million local ads, each with a different URL and text, based on rules we were able to set up in Excel - probably could have done it in PHP but excel was straight forward too). Not sure if things have changed much as we stopped doing PPC a good few years ago.

Nowadays, I would suggest using PHP or something similar (that you program with to your specific needs) as you can then call the Google API rather than rely on spreadsheet uploads - it's all down to how much time you expect to invest in PPC.

Rumbas, any reason you do not use AdCenter? Or just because their system blows?

For most of the stuff I do, the CPC is lower and the conversion rate is on par. It seems like a "free" 10% boost to my google efforts.

There is no traffic at all in Scandinavia on Bing. Got #1 rankings on a bunch of stuff in Bing with no traffic at all - where a top 10 on G makes us good money. Same for Yahoo, not on the map what-so-ever.

Thanks for replies guys and thanks for the message LM.

I should explain the challenge we have right now.

For us it is a matter of manual labor and figuring out a way to automate it.

Right now we have two guys building campaigns and uploading them to Adcenter.  But we can only launch campaigns as fast as these guys can work which isn't fast enough.  Here's our current process:

1) Worker A identifies top level category keyword
2) They enter it into Google's keyword tool and/or another keyword research tool.
3) They export the list of keywords into Excel.  Typically around 1,000 keywords.
4) They then have to break these into sub-category keyword lists in Excel so the landing pages are relevant to the keywords
5) They then have to relevant landing pages on our site.
6) Once these are ready they log into Adcenter, create the campaign, create the ads, and launch it.

Right now #4 is the biggest time suck but I think we're almost done with the process of automating this, or coming close to full automation, via the Adwords and Spyfu API.

I was thinking we should hire some interns or cheap offshore labor for other grunt work.

This doesn't even get into the process of optimization and pruning campaigns.

Any other suggestions are appreciated!

I would definintely go with SpeedPPC, Adwords Editor, even Adcenter has a desktop tool that can be pretty good.

Lastly, I would use some form of tokens to create the landing pages, I've used LPGen in the past which is pretty good, but if you know a bit of PHP you can achieve the same thing with variables and adding them to the pages in URL's.

You have to think suffix/prefix/concatenation and you can bang out massive campaigns pretty quickly.

this may totally not be what you need, but rather than identify keywords and match them to pages, if you're happy you have the content why not take pages and generate keywords from them by sticking the url into the adwords keyword suggest tool?

Undoubtedly some will be cruddy and it will miss some, but it probably cuts a couple of stages.

I found this the other day in adwords editor... it is a bit sloppy but also kind of awesome.

Create a new campaign > Create new adgroup > dump your 1k keywords into here.

Select the adgroup on the left column. Go to the menu > tools > keyword grouper >

Choose the right adroup. Should automatically be detected. Then hit generate common terms.

Follow the next screens prompts and it will create adgroups for you if you select that box. It can also build ads based on another adgroup.
