Google Finally Acknowledges "Project Dragonfly"
« on: October 16, 2018, 02:36:54 PM »
For readers who missed the damning series of leaks sketching out the scope of the project, "Dragonfly" is intended to be a censored search engine that would block results for queries that the Chinese government considered sensitive, like the Mandarin phrases for "human rights" and "student protest". It would also require Chinese users to log in with their credentials before searches can be run, ensuring that the Communist Party can log and examine a comprehensive record of search activity.

A group of Google employees has signed a public letter calling on the company to abandon its plans for a Chinese search product that censors results.

A few quotes come to mind...

One is just an idea. I've heard it said more eloquently: "In the corporate mind, more is always better." Ditto for government. Anyone with power.

"The first instinct of power is the preservation of power"
-- source ??? Someone else quoted it here

"The problem with a race to the bottom is you just might win. Or even worse, come in second."
  -- Seth Godin

The idea that "No, we just don't want that business. It doesn't match our values," is thinking that runs strong in Google employees (pushback on China and Google involvement with the military), but does not run strong with Google executives and shareholders.

It is sad, but who really thought Google would walk away from doing business with 20% of the world's population?
