We need a new Technorati Search Engine
« on: November 26, 2019, 10:13:02 PM »
Or a new IceRocket or Daypop.

I was hanging about with my fellow bloggers and we were whining (much as bloggers do) about the lack of blog search engines these days.  RSS or spider this seems to be a niche that nobody is covering: search engine results only from blogs.  (Blog directories just don't cut it.)

I have no idea how a spidering engine could distinguish between a blog and a non-blog website but it must be possible.  I guess it would be easier for an RSS engine, but not as deep.

Anyway, it's a niche.

Hell, nobody even knows what that is anymore.  I see more & more news-ish sites without a feed.

True.  But a small revival is happening amongst bloggers and indieweb people.  Although JSON feeds are mixed in there too.  Some renewed interest in feed readers too.

RSS, Atom or JSON feeds make sense in a blog context since about 33% of websites are Wordpress and you get the RSS feed by default.

Pine.blog, a feed reader and blog hosting service has added The Feed Directory  https://pine.blog/search

It is not limited to just listing hosted blogs, but anyone can add their feeds (reg. required).  The directory actually spiders the text content of the feed so search is more about content than metas.  It's a nice step forward.

I was curious about the total numbers of active blogs today vs. say 12 years ago and came across this.

Interesting... but of course...

Quote
Tumblr hosts the vast majority of blogs with 440 million.
WordPress, for all its fame and widespread adoption, is a distant second with 60 million.

Quote
One in three bloggers monetizes her or his online activity, and about 10% are making over $10,000 per year. The lucky few, or more precisely the top 0.6%, are raking in a whopping $1M+ annual earnings.

So... there are over 450 million blogs and 10% make over $10K per year. 45 million of those?

And .6% make over a million dollars a year? So 2.7 million bloggers are making over one million dollars a year? On Tumblr?

Sounds about right.

We've all heard about Mastodon, but there is another trend of social networks built around blogs.  Micro.blog is one and it looks like Pine.blog is another.  There are others too.  Wordpress.com is about half way there with Wordpress Reader, only they don't seem willing to build the other half.

Indieweb.org advocates using Webmentions to comment directly between independent blogs and has developed a suite of Wordpress plugins that let you do that with other similarly equipped blogs.  Drupal also has Indieweb plugins and B2evolution has webmentions built in.
