Startpage 2019
« on: November 26, 2019, 02:53:22 PM »
After years of relative quiet and only small incremental changes, privacy search engine Startpage has gotten very active.  Somebody is pumping money and effort into it.

They have also redesigned and cleaned up the serps and have become very active on Twitter.

They must be gaining users given all the discussion about privacy.  The chatter I read online from many mainstream Google users is they like Startpage a lot and it's maybe an easier switch from Google for them than say DDG.

News was hard to find, but that may have been due to my browser.  I'm impressed with the content.

They were bought/invested in by system1, think they were looking to get into the SE space earlier in the year. They were removed from privacytools.io soon after this investment

Followed this from Bol's link. Comments are a pretty good read.

Thanks BoL and RC.  I had no idea.

I keep switching #1 and #2 search engines between DDG and Mojeek with SP as #3 on the rare occasion that I need a deeper crawl.

Think it's fair to say that all the Bing metas have the advantage of a huge index and a fairly refined algo, so they have that.

I'm currently working on the algo ATM, meanwhile the index size is on target to hit 8 billion in the next 18 months. Crawl/refresh rate has been stepped up.

Definitely an interesting space, the 'private search engine', and DDG by traffic are leading it by a mile. What's astounding is that DDG aren't crawling anything and they're doing 50 million queries a day. Their bot just crawls favicons.

There was rumbles of Google being forced to share their index (know of at least one person advising a government wrt anti-competition), but IMHO having separate crawls removes any biases in the indexes in the first place.

Would be excellent if there were 3,4,5 search engines all having a share of the market. Think that'd be ideal, most ideal if they had separate crawls/algos.

>3,4,5

That would be wonderful. Especially if they had their own English lang. indexes.  I think we are working up to that and more will jump on board as Google weakens and privacy becomes more important.  This is why I pay attention to Mojeek.  I had hopes for Findx and it's sad that they chose Gigablast script which failed.

The Bing retread meta market is getting crowded  although Swiss Cows also running their own spider gives me some hope.  Using the example of Startpage, we could probably use another Google based privacy engine too.

Thanks for the update on Mojeek!
