Someguy wants Apple to buy a Search Engine

Sacconaghi thinks Apple should consider acquiring the No. 4 search engine (after Google, Bing, and Yahoo)—privately held DuckDuckGo. He thinks Apple could likely buy it for under $1 billion, “or less than a week’s worth of cash flow.”

If you read the article tho, it seems like the MSM and the financial analyst in question have no clue that DDG is mostly powered by MS Bing.

I wish people would quit talking about DDG as an alternative search engine. As in the previous discussion, there's a huge difference between DDG and Mojeek. Essentially reskinning some other search engine's data set is not the sort of diversity you and BOL were advocating.

Without knowing what DDG's agreement with MS Bing is, the proposal to buy DDG would make Apple dependent on MS without getting the big annual payout from Google.  If I were Apple, I'd want to buy a search engine that has it's own crawler technology and index.

That said, the life expectancy of any smaller search engine that gets gobbled up by one of the big tech companies is not good.  Big tech either just kills them off or lets them rot and die on the vine.

And if an anti-trust suit said that Google could not buy their way into being the default search engine?

Google is obviously the default for Android devices and then they pay their way into being the default for Apple devices. The problem is, if payments were not allowed, would Apple just default to Google based on customer choice? Or, when you bought a new iPhone, would you be forced to choose a default search provider?

The 7-8 billion is easy money for Apple right now. Why would they give that up?

Agree the MSM man probably lacks the understanding of the reality of what a meta search engine is, as much as he's throwing a billion about. Apple buying out DDG sounds dangerous. Their traffic is worth that but perhaps the leverage on that deal wrt MSFT would make it impossible.

On a separate strain look at Huawei, they're selling a huge amounts of phones but due to the US embargo they can't deal with US companies, including search engines. It's interesting. They've made a deal with Qwant, so there's a fair bit of movement on the mobile space. Apparently they sell 50K devices in the UK every week.

For me, if there's opportunities to diversify which search results are provided that's probably a good thing. Looking a G's earnings, you could split that up between many engines and it'd be perfectly economical, and show more slices of what's out there.
