"Given our Responsibility Framework and the polarized atmosphere in the U.S., we have decided that starting now through at least the end of the year, we will not run brand advertising in social media newsfeed platforms Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the U.S.," the company said in a statement. "Continuing to advertise on these platforms at this time would not add value to people and society. We will be monitoring ongoing and will revisit our current position if necessary."

I missed the earlier stories - my wife has been reading Rupert's suggested novels on my newsreader, which is good for her and for me.

The scope is pretty major. They'll all be back, but maybe not if they find equally profitable channels in the meantime.

It makes me think this may result in the one issue where Donald Trump and Noam Chomsky agree.

I'm thinking of "Manufacturing Consent"

Quote
Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is a 1988 book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky, in which the authors propose that the mass communication media of the U.S. "are effective and powerful ideological institutions that carry out a system-supportive propaganda function, by reliance on market forces, internalized assumptions, and self-censorship, and without overt coercion", by means of the propaganda model of communication.

There is buzz that Zuck is going to drop news altogether.  I think he has the social marketshare to do it.

Honestly, I have not been on Facebook in so long that I don't really understand that comment. What is "news"? I thought main issue was sharing links to news.

I only use a gutted browser to view FB Marketplace for tools (too high! CL is cheaper.), so I'm not much of a FB UI authority, but the articles say normal user see a news feed of some sort.
