That would be great.  I found it odd that they went through all the effort to game and then buy Inktomi only to just drop out of search.  They also bought goto.com.  Between the two they seemed like they could have been in a good position to take on the competition.

Same.  But anything Yahoo bought was the kiss of death.  Yahoo was one of the most mismanaged companies ever.

And I kinda think they were hampered by trying to cobble together old code from Inktomi, AlltheWeb and AltaVista instead of learning from that old code and starting fresh and writing something more efficient.

Well,  startups like Mojeek have proven that you can make an indexing search engine today without it costing billions of dollars so now is the time to try it especially with Google and MS laying off so much talent.

It will be interesting how Yahoo does this: will they just do a Bing retread with a new looking SERP or will they go for broke and build their own search index?  Anyone care to speculate?

Would be awesome. I doubt they will pull it off though. Miss having different engines to optimize for.

>Inktomi, AlltheWeb and AltaVista

Was amazing that they would f### up so many brilliant technologies at that time.

Not sure if they will, obviously costs more with potential much higher upside. Crawling can be an issue for a new bot and large sites. To fetch most of wikipedia you need to grab a page a second for an entire year which does not include refreshing those pages. Takes time to build up the index.

The likes of Facebook's robots.txt that goes for a whitelisting method and disallow everything else means there'll be gaps that otherwise Bing doesn't have.

Using Bing they can only ever hope of making a few bucks per 1000 searches and a fraction of what Google earns. Still, the traffic they get would make it a large revenue stream.

I guess Yahoo could do something like Brave search, what ever THAT is.
