:-)

That's exactly what I was talking about when I said failing to live up to American ideals by supporting dictators for short-term gain during the Cold War hurt us and made us less secure in the long run

Quote
The coup fanned the flames of anti-Western sentiment, which reached a crescendo in 1979 with the U.S. hostage crisis, the final overthrow of the shah, and the creation of the Islamic Republic to counter the “Great Satan.”

The coup alienated liberals in Iran as well. Mossadegh is widely considered to be the closest thing Iran has ever had to a democratic leader. He openly championed democratic values and hoped to establish a democracy in Iran.

The big problem with the coup in Iran is that it seemed so successful at the time that the CIA enthusiastically tried it several more times, sometimes successfully and those "successes" have overwhelmingly created the security problems we face today in the Middle East and South America and, to a lesser extent in Asia (there it's mostly a function of the rise of China... but you could argue...)

The really interesting part of that is the Kashani involvement. It basically shows how much our problems in Iran mirror those in Afghanistan. In an effort to defeat socialism, we propped up the Islamic clerics who also feared socialism, but who also ultimately became the rallying point for the anti-American movement.
