a4uexpo in Munich
« on: May 21, 2011, 11:39:44 PM »
I am heading over to Munich for the a4uexpo from the 5th to 8th June and I was wondering who else from in here was planning on going? Always up for a few beers and a chat.

Never been to Munich before, any places to see/avoid?

If you want to do the tourism thing, Munich will take you a day or more to whizz around the main sights - city centre and then up to the north into the uni district. Used to be good music and bars up there in the evenings as well.

You really should do the beerhall experience, preferably not the Hofbräuhaus - try the Weisses Bräuhaus ( http://www.weisses-brauhaus.de/ ) from the Schneider brewery (great darker wheat beer), and if you are a full-on meat eater then it's worth visiting the Haxnbauer restaurant (speciality is roast knuckle of pork, although it's also available all over Munich). Both are just outside the pedestrian area in the city centre.

Munich's a great city, one of my favourites and you shouldn't be able to get yourself into too much trouble unless you deliberately go looking for it. It's an arty-farty media luvvie trendy publishing centre plonked in the middle of conservative Bavaria.

If you want a quick excursion try Andechs monastery (beer again), the Starnberger See (lake), or take the train down to the mountain resorts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen or, even better, Mittenwald. (I'd be happy to buy a beer for anyone who is doing the latter option - can't make the conference as I have something bang in the middle of it.)
