Missing here is discussion of the quality of service and that includes final delivery.
My UPS guy has been on this route for over 10 years, he knows the names, homes and offices of people on his route. He always makes an effort to set packages on the porch out of the rain. He's courteous and works hard. You know that if a package is on his truck it will make it to your house.
The USPS carrier on my route is the same way, if he gets it you get it. However, over holidays sometimes the post office has different people with less experience, delivering parcels separately and quality suffers a bit. Still it's darn good service except he keeps delivering bills too.
FedEx and DHL can't find the right street, can't read street signs, leave packages out in the weather at the wrong address and generally don't care.
I'm kinda skeptical that Amz can match that last 10 miles in terms of quality, consistency and reliability using independent contractors.
If I have a choice of carrier at checkout I almost always choose UPS for anything important with USPS second.
