Amazon delivery
« on: February 09, 2018, 07:31:27 PM »
Had a onversation with a UPS employee 2 months ago. Asked how worried he was about Amazon's contract last-mile delivery workers, new cargo planes, etc.

He said they'd never compete directly with UPS. I said Jeff Bezos might be his CEO soon.

"Amazon to Launch Delivery Service That Would Vie With FedEx, UPS"

The Fedex CEO is in complete denial.

Until automation really kicks in, there is a driver shortage (50,000 drivers needed I read recently). So if I were a UPS guy aged 55, I'd feel okay with the situation. If were 30, I'd be looking into my plan B

"The customers are not going to approve of the channel conflict" reminds me of this article's great title.

Missing here is discussion of the quality of service and that includes final delivery.

My UPS guy has been on this route for over 10 years, he knows the names, homes and offices of people on his route.  He always makes an effort to set packages on the porch out of the rain. He's courteous and works hard. You know that if a package is on his truck it will make it to your house.

The USPS carrier on my route is the same way, if he gets it you get it.  However, over holidays sometimes the post office has different people with less experience, delivering parcels separately and quality suffers a bit. Still it's darn good service except he keeps delivering bills too.

FedEx and DHL can't find the right street, can't read street signs, leave packages out in the weather at the wrong address and generally don't care.

I'm kinda skeptical that Amz can match that last 10 miles in terms of quality, consistency and reliability using independent contractors.

If I  have a choice of carrier at checkout I almost always choose UPS for anything important with USPS second.

Perhaps the UPS and USPS guys will start showing up with a new uniform.

Actually, they'll be independent contractors, wearing street clothes and driving their personal vehicle.

That's how the majority of our local USPS carriers operate.  We're a very large, rural postal district. It's only within the small city that I see USPS trucks. Everywhere surrounding is delivered by a swarm of independent rural mail carriers.

And, as mentioned earlier in another thread, Fedex deliveries here is almost entirely independents. The trucks are painted with the FE logo but their is a small text disclaimer on the side panels.

Took longer than I thought.
