I just watched a movie that reminded me of this thread and other conversations we've had about technology taking care of the elderly.  It is called Robot & Frank, from 2012 and is suppose to take place in the near future.  In this world most of the elderly have service bots that take care of them.

Judging from the news articles, Japan is significantly ahead of the rest of the world in robotic elder care. But, damn, the prices are astronomically high. Even after the bleeding edge dulls, they are going to be too pricey for the masses for quite a while.

Meanwhile, where's my damn$300-ish robot puppy?
