The Commodore 64 is back and better than ever!

The new Commodore 64, which will begin shipping at the end of the month, has been souped up for the modern age. It comes with a 1.8 gigahertz dual-core processor, an optional Blu-ray player and built-in ethernet and HDMI ports. It runs the Linux operating system but the company says you can install Windows if you like. The new Commodore is priced between $250 to $900.

The company's Web site says that the new Commodore 64 is "a modern functional PC," and that although the guts of the device have greatly improved, the exterior is "as close to the original in design as humanly possible." Most people would not be able to visibly tell the old or new versions apart, it says.

"The response has been completely dramatic," Mr. Altman said. "We've been averaging about five registrations per second on our Web site. This is from people giving us their name and e-mail address to be kept abreast of updates on the new Commodore."

I fell into the Spectrum camp, so never had a C64... but.... I have to say that looks neat - Retro is always cool, and if the Linux option is cheap and reasonably specced, I would be tempted.

Ditto!  I even have both cassette decks (if a game didn't load on one I would try the other)

It houses a modern mini-ITX PC motherboard featuring a Dual Core 525 Atom processor and the latest nVidia ION2 graphics chipset. It comes in the original taupe brown/beige color, with other colors to follow.

Stickng a mini-itx motherboard into an old C64 keyboard/case has been a popular hack for years.  Looks like they just finally took the hack and made a commercial product of it.  Makes for a cute Linux box that has a lot of nostalgia, but it has little to do with the  old C64 OS underneath.

BTW, if you want an emulator:

Heh, we just cleaned out the attic a couple weeks ago.

Still have the C64, Commodore monitor, 1541 drive, cassette, couple cases of 5-1/4 floppies, fast load cartridge, and even ISEPIC! (anyone remember/know what that is?)

I was a C64 boy. With the disk drive, eventually. Don't remember ISEPIC! but remember Falcon Patrol and Beachhead and Blue Max

I have just finished reading Alan Sugar's book.  There is a great Chapter or two about the development of the Amstrad CPC and others.  Well worth a read.

I'm sorry but this looks like an April Fools joke to me.
Esp. with the 3D-graphics on that site, instead of proper pictures.

Am I paranoid, cynical or just dim?

P.S.: and yes, I also still have a proper C64 with tape
deck stashed away somewhere

Not only did I have a Spectrum, but I have most of a ZX81 somewhere (the keyboard membrane degraded so the whole bottom row of keys stopped working, sadly). Lets hear it for 16Kb RAM packs...
