Anyone traveling to see the solar eclipse on April 8th?
« on: April 02, 2024, 09:53:09 PM »
I'm getting my little camper and heading to southeast Missouri -- the north fork of the White River, to be exact. Gonna flyfish for some trout while I'm there and see the 4.5 minutes of solar eclipse as well.

I went to Grand Island, Nebraska during the last eclipse and it was only 2 minutes. It was wild to see the animals change to nocturnal behaviors. And it *felt* significantly cooler. Really interesting.

I can't wait to see what it will do this time.

Total solar eclipse forecast looks cloudy for much of the path

Best chance for clear skies favors the northeast U.S. right now

Seeing a total solar eclipse should be on everyone's bucket list.  I took my family to see the last one.

Wow, quite an image!  Turns out most of that area was cloudy today.

The clouds parted for 60 of the 120 seconds of total eclipse at our location in TX. It was incredible. One of those "photos can't capture the experience" moments. It was very dark.

We had perfect weather through the whole thing. We watched it from my brother’s back porch with him, SIL, nephew, and someone who has been a friend for 45 years.

We all thought it was better than expected.  I don’t think any of us expected the ring around the moon to be so bright. Pretty cool.

I also got to experience first ever bumper to bumper traffic on the highway in Vermont. 160,000 visitors to a state of 640,000. I figure going to my dads from my brothers, we saw 300 cars in the see saw stop and go and we looked for and saw only 3 other VT plates.

Nice Ergo!  There was a lot of traffic in rural Oregon when I was up there for the last eclipse.

Oh and we also saw Jupiter.

We had something like 3:16 of totality. We could have gotten another 20-30 seconds at my cousins house. When we saw the traffic on the way home, over four hours after the end of the eclipse, we were thankful we didn’t go there. She was right in the path of maximum totality, but a long stretch of two-lane road (one lane each way) to get home. We would still be on the road

Anyway, it was enjoyed by all. A memorable event and we made basically a whole day of it with family. A great day.

We also had 14 at my sister’s house for Easter and most of stayed for 4+ days. These have been the first gatherings of all the remaining siblings and my dad since my sister passed away. So it’s been a wonderful trip.
