Title: Apple just banned cryptocurrency mining on iOS devices
Post by: rcjordan on June 11, 2018, 09:15:12 PM
Apple's new policy seems to go beyond obviously abusive cases of surreptitious cryptocurrency mining. The guidelines ban any on-device mining—even if users deliberately download an app whose explicit purpose is to mine for cryptocurrency.

That never stopped Apple.  You do it Apple's way or walk.

That said, I think crypto currencies are all a scam so IMHO Apple's right.

No doubt, but just a shy more than MS products.

I agree that there is a lot of scamming going on, and dumb money chasing smart money.  Yet, I think it will eventually get established.  Blockchain is an interesting technology.   IMO, a crypto currency that is backed by a tangible asset, say redeemable by gold, has long term real-world potential.

And I think Apple might have a point: these are battery powered handheld devices, not really intended for high end number crunching.  Apple will get the blame for sluggish performance and reduced battery life when it really isn't their fault.  If people want to mine cryptocurrency they ought to get a proper computer with a full fledged OS.

Maybe it will boost desktop and laptop sales.

In recent years owning Apple devices has felt more and more like you are borrowing them from Apple.
Lots of activity drain battery in the background. Are they going to ban their users from using fitness apps, Facebook, messengers and everything else too?

I agree that most of the activity around Crypto currencies and mining is now a scam, but I still don't see how that is any of Apple's business. There are plenty of ill-advised things you can use a device for.
