From what I've read that is a likely scenario for a run-away greenhouse future.

A lot of the methane emissions from fracking could be reduced if regulations had some teeth.   Apparently there was a well in SoCal that was just leaking the methane out for months with no one doing anything about it.

The atmospheric residence time of methane is approximately 8 years.  Residence time is the average time it takes for a molecule to be removed, so in this case for every molecule of methane that goes into the atmosphere it stays there for 8 years until it is removed by some process.
