I live near a reef.
« on: June 22, 2013, 07:07:22 PM »
So, after six years of going to the same beach, about 1 mile from my house, I just found out that about 25meters beyond where I normally 'cool off' is one of the best walk in dive areas in the entire country.

I feel like a total idiot. And I'm not just talking about a little reef, I mean a serious f###ing reef, complete with sharks - I just saw one today.

So I bought some gear for me and my new wife, and we've been hitting it ever since.  It is AWESOME.  I mean I can swim to the bottom and grab a lobster if I wanted (and I had a license).  They have sea turtles here.  I am honestly blown away.  I had no idea at all.  I mean, I knew there was good diving around, but I didn't think my sorry a## could just swim out there and be in the middle of an episode of 'Wild Kingdom'.

Anyway, I'm on my iPhone and I can't attach a pic. So use your imagination:)

Count yourself lucky that you now know; Mother nature is still the boss.

I live somewhere a lot of people say is beautiful (the Cotswold) but because it's on my door step I take it for granted.
Just post some pics if you get a chance and share the love. It will probably be something I will never experience :(

I hear you.  No matter where in the world you are, it's exotic to someone else:) Heheheh if I showed up there, I'd be taking pictures of stupid things like your mailbox, or your neighbors fence, or something that looks a little different than I'm used to and be and posting it on facebook, and all my friends would be like, "that's so cool, he's in Cotswold!!" But if you do it, it would be kinda stange:)

But this is kinda different than that. Its more like going to your local pub and hear something about a huge cave up the street from your house.  At first you think he's joking, and then finally you are like, 'wait a second, a CAVE?" And the dude will look at you shocked, like you just farted in church, and say, "yeah, it's the largest cave on this continent!" And you will still be like, "...with bats, and stalagmites?" And he will be like, "yeah, how can you have no idea how you could not know it was right around the corner from you?"  And you will be like, "I don't know..." Then after a few more seconds you'll be like, "ok, then, let's go see this cave then." And he'll be like "right now?", and you'll be like "yeah, like right now!" heheheeh that's what it would be like:)

...you see what I'm saying?  You can walk halfway out there and doggie paddle the rest.

And it's all around me:

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is the "Shore Dive Capital of South Florida" with easy access to some of the best reefs in Florida as well as our very own Shipwreck Snorkel Trail.

I've just rolled into Sirmione on the shores of Lake Garda. Not quite around the corner but just a couple hour flight and mind blowingly beautiful!

...that place looks awesome.  What a great castle. I would consider living in Italy, actually. I really liked it there. And it's not far from Bulgaria, where my wife is from. I loved it.

I just got back, again, and once again, crazy cool experience.  I think we are getting a little better at the whole thing too.  Too bad I don't have any kind of underwater camera.  Anyway, it just goes to show you that adventure can be right around the corner but you still have to seek it out.

Thanks for reminding me.  I live in a beautiful and touristy place and have a lot of nice things around that I take for granted, such as some great reefs.  Time to grab some gear this week and do some snorkeling.
