Saw this chubby guy last weekend in Tahoe
« on: October 08, 2022, 03:11:53 AM »
He's called Hank the Tank and has completely gave up hunting in favor of eating a diet of human food, as you could tell by his magnificent physique.  He's reportedly broken into many homes over the years, and is known to feast on trash day.  He was just hanging out in someone's front yard and seems very indifferent to humans.  These pics were taken from inside a car.

Oh gosh. That is one fat bear. He is doing America proud.

Once they discover human food, it’s game over. 3000 calories can be obtained from roughly 70 pounds of meadow grass or one bag of Oreos. Which would you choose? Especially if you’re trying to eat 20,000 to 25,000 calories per day.

There used to be a bear called Tank in Yosemite before they stopped naming bears. Other bears would follow him around as he broke into cars and thus learned his methods.

The sad thing is they can’t go back. Those car break ins often break their claws and the food rots their teeth so they can’t go back to traditional food sources.

That completely makes sense now that you said it.  There was a bear on the Nevada side that walked into a store and they relocated.  Poor thing eventually made it's way back to a residential area, by then it was very emaciated.  It ended up getting shot while trying to break into someone's place.

The thing about Otis last year, and why many voted for him, was that he finished his hibernation late:  it was late June something when he finally came out to fish.  He was extremely thin, and biologists were surprised he survived another year.  He put all that weight on even though he is one of the oldest bears out there, his teeth are nubs and he isn't strong enough to fight the younger bears for a spot on the river, AND he started a month after all the other bears.

I was surprised to see him this year.  I figured he'd go to sleep and not wake up.

Then, there is Holly, a female bear who is still having cubs in her late 20s.  I like her too.

Yes.  I get into fat bear week.

747 won this year, and its no surprise to me.  He's frickin huge.
