Black Mirror Scenario
« on: August 26, 2019, 05:40:00 PM »
For those not familiar, the "Black Mirror" series often examines unanticipated, dark and dystopian consequences of new technologies. Episodes are usually set in the present or near future.

In 2016 they released an episode called "Nosedive" about social credit systems.

China has since begun testing social credit systems.

Today: "Silicon Valley is building a Chinese-Style social credit system"

"It’s a technology-enabled, surveillance-based nationwide program designed to nudge citizens toward better behavior. The ultimate goal is to “allow the trustworthy to roam everywhere under heaven while making it hard for the discredited to take a single step,” according to the Chinese government."

Can it happen here?  Probably.  Look at how much privacy invasion we tolerate now.  Nations of the world really need to enshrine human rights into their constitutions.

Sure.  Want to fly on a plane?  We still have secret no-fly lists, it's not a big step that people with a certain social profile score could get put on a no-fly list or a "extra screening" list.  If you don't have a drivers license that conforms to the Real ID law you can't fly or enter certain government buildings.  These modify your behavior and the rules of access can be changed at the stroke of a pen.

A key component of that effort, known as SBINet, was canceled after five years and more than $1 billion in expenditures. In the wake of that failure, CBP turned to Elbit, based in Haifa, Israel, awarding it a $145 million contract in 2014 to develop the integrated fixed towers in southern Arizona. In addition to fixed and mobile surveillance towers, other technology that CBP has acquired and deployed includes blimps outfitted with high-powered ground and air radar, sensors buried underground, and facial recognition software at ports of entry. CBP’s drone fleet has been described as the largest of any U.S. agency outside the Department of Defense.
