Post by: ergophobe on November 07, 2016, 06:51:57 PM
Here's our chance to avoid getting too out of shape with holidays and the shortest day of the year coming around. The last week is only six days, but that ends the year... then it's time to make 2017 commitments!

I'm officially making it my goal to reach 100 pounds in my weight loss quest by the end of the year.

I'm at 90+ right now.

Thanks for taking the lead on this Ergo.

Way to go Buckworks!

I'm in for 4 workouts a week.

I had a sense you were looking for help there LM... apologies for not stepping up to the mark.

There are moments for catching up on the core... and then work/family drops back in :)

Thanks Ergo... and go for it Buckworks! My best weight loss was 5 weeks travelling and treking. Ate like a horse, and still lost weight!

still going for 4 activities... Ideally run/swim/cycle and tennis each week.

174, 1# over that pix I posted before the Hanoi trip. I'm in slightly better shape, though, the on-going light construction is returning some strength.  I've also been working on joint pain and had some modest, sustainable success with the hot tub & sauna (& glucosamine-chondroitin supplement) , so that's been good.

I didn't eat any/all of the leftover Halloween candy, either.

Oh yeah, I'm in for 4/4.

Bucky - glad to have you back. Would have loved to have seen less of you at Pubcon... instead of none of you ;-) That's a huge weight loss. Good going. It will pay huge dividends for enjoying the grandkids.

OK, starting to get interested in this now. Every medic I talk to says that there are no clinically proven trials of glucosamine... in people or dogs. But there are loads who take it. I understand that it takes time (3 months of taking it??)

Heat certainly works, and cold hurts...  (4 degrees out on the bike today at 80 mph, wind chill est -11 C)

I always used to go barefoot around the house but now I often wear cozy sheepskin slippers. I'm convinced the warmth helps to keep my feet more limber.

Next up: knitting a pair of leg warmers!

>glucosamine
>chondroitin

I think the chondroitin is the joint pain stuff.

First of all, I do not believe in supplements in general. I'm convinced that 99.9% of them are scams.  Secondly, I *hate* taking pills or meds and will avoid doing so at my peril. It's safe to say that I'm beyond skeptical regarding supplements.  Also, if you're going to take them, get them from a source known to be honest about the content --we've had a large scandal here, some mfr putting ZERO % of the advertised ingredient in the bottle. I take Swanson brand.

I will experiment and only keep taking a supplement if I can prove to myself that there is an improvement. I typically do this by quitting, then see if I notice a difference. 3 times.  That experiment was easy to do with the nightly leg cramps.  Quit taking potassium/magnesium/calcium and be awakened by the dark angel of pain. Take them, cramps go away.  The joint pain is more subjective, but I have quit glucosamine-chondroitin at least three times -probably more- and each time it eventually dawns on me after a few weeks that "Hey! I was doing better than this!" and I restart.  It is not a cure, it just takes the edge off the soreness.

>takes time

Yes, it took about 3-4 weeks this last time.

Both of my supplement regimes are cheap.

I take no other pain killers, btw. I try to reserve NSAIDS for when I really need them.

I'm in for this one. Trying to do 7/7 days of either some kind of exercise or at least 30 min of stretching. My goal is to get a 30 day string (I'm currently on D5)... but I can try to keep it going through the end of December. It'd probably be good for me.

Buckworks - missed you at Pubcon. Also - sheepskin slippers and leg warmers! Good idea!

Haha! Thanks for the welcome. Aim high, I guess.

I was listening to a podcast the other day that suggested that goals where the "default" is to do something every day are easier to keep track of mentally. Thought I'd give it a shot. I guess you guys will see if it turns out that way or not.

BTW - I'm totally counting "jumping around the living room" for 10 min. "exercise" on those busy days.  ;)

4.5/4

Did my usual 4/4 weight training and then did some 50 yard sprints after our last workout tonight (Sunday); my legs feel like Jello.  We are going to incorporate sprints from here on out once a week.

Diet wise I totally went off the rails for one meal this week.  I had a Dim Sum lunch with my wife's family.  There is no way to eat low-carb with that type of food.  I completely enjoyed it and now I am back on track and I'm hoping to shed the water weight in a day or two.

>>sprints

Good job! I've been thinking of doing some too. This summer I spent two weeks at a place that had a track and I did some 400m laps. My "fade" was incredible after a couple of laps. I think I would benefit from some even shorter distances. Usually below 1/4 mile I only do hill sprints.

4/4 here
 - three runs, including one that included a bit of brush clearing (aka trail maintenance - got sick of getting scratched up by the whitethorn... ruined a shirt last time)
 - one day climbing

I need to get back into strength training... I've gotten so weak, but I'm unmotivated for the strength stuff. Plan is to muddle through to the New Year and then try to put some weight back on in 2017. I'm what I would call 10 pounds underweight for muscle and perhaps 5 pounds overweight for fat.

>unmotivated for the strength stuff.

That's how I am for cardio.  I just hate steady-state repetition.  Sprints though are enjoyable because I push my entire body to the limit.  I am not really built to be a fast person, but I have always admired speed and I love the sensation of moving like that.

>hill sprints

Wow, that would be challenging.  I live directly across a street from a track and turf field, so regular sprints are super convenient.

To me running, humping uphill, etc is like a form of meditation. I zone out and if I don't do things like that regularly, my mind gets cloudy. I love strength training, but it doesn't do that for me.

I guess I could count in a gentle circuit with my girls. then 4/4 ;)

Still not run.. stretching...

178 after a week of travel. This is better than my usual travel gain but not as good as I'd hoped. I tried to maintain fairly strict low-carb on the road --and given the venue of carb-packed pot-luck dinners & donut breakfasts the motorhome group, I did OK. Still disappointed, though.

I'm at 3.5/4 or 4/4 already. Short sessions (2.5-3 mile runs and yesterday I did a short weight session in the morning and another short weight session at lunch).

But that's not why I'm checking in. This morning I went to run up to Sunset Bluff, only 1.4 miles (but about 500+ feet of gain, so...) and in the fresh snow I start seeing big cat tracks. I'm not in the least bit afraid of bears, but the big cats scare me. After a while, they disappear, and then I see another track, then a second going parallel, then a third going parallel. So either that one cat has a route and keeps cycling through that spot... or there was a meeting of three cats. Either way, I was definitely in cougar country. This is about 1/4 mile from the house as the crow flies.

It's an unsettling and primeval feeling to know that you are not the apex species in the woods, that you're in the territory of something that could and just might take you out without any trouble whatsoever.

Whoops! I'm slacking on reporting in, but I've been good with my daily physical activity goal. Between exercise and stretching, I haven't missed a day yet...

Of course, there was a bit of a debate on what counts as "exercise". I found a 7-minute workout app that has 30 second activity rounds with a 5 sec break between them. Really good for that night when I realized at 11p that I was about to miss an exercise day. 7 minutes of exercise seems kind of borderline, but I'm counting it. (1) My goal is really to establish an exercise habit, so getting myself to exercise, even if it's only a short set seems ok. (2) As it turns out, doing as many push-ups as I can in 30 seconds left me feeling sore, and I found I couldn't do nearly as many as when I was doing that 7-min workout more regularly, so I figure I'm getting some benefit out of it.

Wow, scary. Do you carry anything form of protection when you run.  The thing that gets me about running in the woods is that cats love to chase things.  I once encountered a cougar at night.  I was when I was hanging out with some friends in a field (drinking beer) in my college days at UCSC.  The thing walked right past us in a open area, maybe 30 ft. away.  I've seen a bobcat at Yosemite and it was close, but the cougar was on a different level of intensity.

Last July there was a cougar walking the streets of San Fransisco.

Thanks for checking in ST.  I think small duration exercises definitely add up, especially if they are as intense as  maxing out on push-ups.

Wow, scary. Do you carry anything form of protection when you run.

Mostly just a loud and annoying voice. I sort of "woof" on the theory that the cougar will avoid me if it hears me coming, but if it happens across me from behind I'm probably dead before I can do anything with pepper spray.

Quick quiz: How many people have been killed in attacks by the following in Yosemite since the creation of the park?
 - bears
 - cougars
 - deer
 - rattlesnakes
 - attack trees

Last July there was a cougar walking the streets of San Fransisco.

Wow! I guess when we leave them no habitat without people, they'll start living with people... mountain lions feeling comfortable around people is not a good thing.

Really good for that night when I realized at 11p that I was about to miss an exercise day.

Not so good for falling asleep afterwards, but she is consistent these days. I think we're both coming down from peak pudge about a month ago.

No idea, but I am going to guess trees have killed the most people.  I remember reading the coconuts kill more people than sharks.
Title: Re: Core Commit to Health & Fitness 2016, Final Round: Nov 7 to Dec 31

Bears: 0
Mt Lions: 0
Rattlesnakes: 0 confirmed (2 possible, but other factors suggest at least one was a bee allergy)
Deer: 1
Trees: 25 (maybe more).

The animals that have killed the most people are, in order, people and horses.

So yes, I am scared of mountain lions, but not as scared as I am of driving to work every day.

Ergophobe is reminding me to check in again at the week's end. 7/7 this week.

- 30+ minute stretching sessions x 2
- 7-min workouts x 2
- run or uphill run/walk x 4

Next week is a travel week, so things will get harder, but not giving myself leeway to push some kind of activity off until "tomorrow" seems to be working for me.

- four times running
- .5 + 5. weight workouts

Really need to get back on the strength training thing... There might be a New Year's Resolution coming.

Looks like a great week guys.  Dras?

>workout with your daughter.

I did my usual 4/4 with mine (she's my second oldest, 16 y.o.).  On our last workout of the week my oldest (18 y.o.) came with us.  She has no real weight training experience, but I think she's been inspired by the 16 y.o..  My oldest is a bit under developed when it comes to strength, but I think she has good potential if sticks with it.  For her first time doing the exercises she had very good form.  Meanwhile the 16 y.o. is taking huge pride in being stronger than about 40% of the males in the gym -- she's still rolling up her sleeves and flexing in the mirror.

We didn't get to do our sprints on Sunday due to rain, I am hoping to get to them today.

177.5 this morning.  Given my daily weight deviation of +/- 2 pounds, I consider this to be excellent results through the usually diet-killing Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas season.  I've been traveling well over half the time during this period, but have focused on eating ultra-low-carb.

BTW, 2 pounds of steak does a pretty good job of displacing cravings for pumpkin or cherry pie.

171 today. BTW, I use a balance-beam scale for accuracy. It always amazes me how much daily variance there is.

I start the *heavy* holiday traveling/partying tomorrow and wanted to get to 170-ish beforehand. Individually, the venues are not as diet-threatening as Halloween & Thanksgiving, but there is a whole bunch more of it. Pretty continuous with only a few breaks until New Year.  No matter how it goes in December, I've not made it through Thanksgiving before and maintained my diet.  That was pretty cool.

I read somewhere recently that most people do their weight gaining from Holiday eating.  They think they'll lose it later, but most just keep it on and then repeat the next year.

At Pubcon1 I was just coming off a decade-long stint of eating every meal in a restaurant. That was part of the problem, yes, but holiday & travel eating was the other part, probably more than half of it.  This is at least the 3rd time I've had to resort to low-carb to reign in my weight.  The creep back up *always* started with a combination of food boredom and a big holiday &/OR travel event.  With each new session of dieting I've eventually been able to get to a lower weight than the previous diet -which was great- but after the 2nd time or so I started to focus on breaking the cycle --which usually means a lifestyle change.  Trouble was, I really liked my lifestyle.

>How are you feeling now littleman?

Still a bit under the weather, but I did have a busy Sunday of getting chores done.  After our fourth washing machine died in 17 years (it was only 2 years old and had the transmission break, a $200 part and a lot of work to install) I dreaded the thought of shelling out $500 for another machine.  Modern appliance quality really isn't what it use to be.  So, I looked on craigslist and found a used unit for $20.  I borrowed a van and took my weight lifting daughter with me to grab it.  We showed up with some lifting straps.  The man at the door was very distraught.  I think it really bothered him that a girl was going to help me pick up the machine.  I finally told him that she's stronger than she looks, then my daughter said, "I can leg press 530, I'm fine."

Anyway, I put the $20 machine in place and it seems to be working fine.  It looks to be from the 1980s.  I figure, if it lasts six months I am ahead.

>>It looks to be from the 1980s.

Our washer is from the 1980s I think. A neighbor gave it to us when they upgraded and we were almost done building. I keep thinking of upgrading because it is not water efficient, but as you say, the new appliances have terrible reliability. In our case it has always been the circuit boards that fry.

A sad week for me this time. After 27 days straight of getting either exercise or stretching in every day, a art-judging meeting went hours longer than expected, and I missed Friday. I realized it as I was getting ready to crawl into bed at nearly mid-night with a 6am wake up scheduled the next day, and I just got into bed anyway. I guess I now just need to beat 27 days?

1 alpine ski day, 1 XC ski day, hiked Mt. Mansfield in VT, 2 days of stretching and a 7 min workout. 6/7.

Ergo, this is one of those bugs that are somewhat like the flu but last much longer.  Right now it seems to be working its way through the family.  It started with our youngest, then I got it, now Kelsey has it.  My wife seems to have some magical power to not get sick until the rest of us are on the mend.  I am on day five right now and I'm gradually getting better.

Kind of missed that. I think actually we like to have fun, but do find a lot of forms of exercise to be fun. I don't think we're particularly driven. Theresa is a bit more driven then me though. For me, if I'm not having fun at something I have a lot of trouble continuing.

I don't mind breaking a sweat at all and will go to exhausting extremes if I'm working on something.  (Exhausting changes considerably as the years add up, though. Wait until you hit 58, then you'll see what I mean.) I find exercise for exercise's sake incredibly boring. I sort of envy those who enjoy the gym or outdoor stuff but I'm always thinking This is a waste of my time, I could be doing so-and-so!

I'm back home between holiday trips. 173 this morning. Holding up well so far this Fat Season!

Nice job RC.

I did 2/4, still a little sick, but on the mend.

Well done both of you.

Ashamed to say 0/4.

Just a busy week... jumping about.  Only time out has been a bit of chat on here...

Christmas is certainly revving up here! Note to self, must do better!

4/4 - not as energetic as I'd like, but I got out there. Two of which would have not happened at all but for the commitment I've made here. Thanks for your support!

will go to exhausting extremes if I'm working on something.

Ha! I will go to exhausting extremes as long as I'm wandering purposelessly around the mountains and forests. To paraphrase WC Fields, I've spent half my life wandering aimlessly around forests and mountains. The other half I wasted. A famous mountaineer (Lachenal or Terray) titled his biography "Conquerers of the Useless."

I grew up working --if not for profit, then for fun/cool stuff. If you look up 'Puritan Work Ethic' I'm sure a picture of my mom & dad will be in the header.  But studying Peter Drucker in business school finished me off.   I'm constantly thinking about the best time management, such as if I start the coffee THEN brush my teeth while it's perking, that's a better use of time.  It's sometimes maddening in an obsessive-compulsive way but I have to do it.

Back on the road for a week or more. This trip will be tough to keep the weight gain within reason.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but doesn't having coffee after brushing your teeth make the coffee taste bad? I know a woman who used tooth-brushing as a way to curb appetite because it just doesn't sound that tasty to have food right after toothpaste.

Steady state cardio is a good time to get caught up on podcasts and thinking/processing. Not sure how rigorous the science is, but there have been some studies (http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_nature_makes_you_kinder_happier_more_creative) that show that getting outside promotes creativity.

Ergophobe is much better at spontaneous exercise than I am. For exercise, I need to have a plan, and some kind of mental game/challenge going on to keep me motivated. As cheesy as they are, workout videos where you only have to motivate and organize as far as pushing play and then just follow along work well for me. Wandering aimlessly about in the mountains is exercise but only incidentally. I'd say that the mountain wandering is what I exercise *for*, but that won't keep me from counting it in a challenge.  ;)

I'm 7/7 this week, on day 11 of the current streak.

I grew up working

Me too - first "outside the home" job at age 10 in the local apple orchard (at least back then, farm labor was allowed at almost any age, within limits).

>>'Puritan Work Ethic' I'm sure a picture of my mom & dad...

Not dissimilar. My dad worked two full-time jobs most of my childhood until I was about 13.

>>constantly thinking about the best time management

Again, not dissimilar, including applying functional programming concepts to folding the laundry (essentially, recursion) and thinking about efficiency for all sorts of activities.

BUT... I place a really high value on down time, time in nature, time where my mind is free to roam. I also believe that this is a key to productivity FOR ME (not trying to say what works for others).

I've pretty much always felt this way. I think I spent less time studying than my peers in college who got similar grades, mostly by working when I work, playing when I play (they would often study together in "study groups" that were great for socializing and terrible for studying). I know I spent less time working in grad school than most of my peers and I finished with more publications than any of them I can think of. I always felt when I would see my colleagues reading scholarly papers on the treadmill that they were both learning little and getting an inferior workout and, essentially, wasting their time by doing two things at once and not being fully engaged in either.

Many years later, I came across this:
https://www.amazon.com/Way-Were-Working-Isnt-Performance/dp/1451610262

The summary version (I haven't watched this, but I assume it's a summary of the book since it's the same title)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smrMWv5rcCo

I think he's addressing something slightly different that what you're saying RC. I get what you're saying (I think)- if you can switch between a high-intensity activity that's "work" and a low-intensity activity that is "fun" but productive, it's a double win.

There are plenty of times I've wished I were more like that... but a man's got to know his limitations!

For me, though, time to let my mind wander is key to being productive in the long run. It's a lot of why I really enjoy solitary running and dislike exercise classes.... speaking of which... I have 1:15 to go wander aimlessly in the woods before my next meeting. I better get going ;-)

This is an interesting side topic.  I grew up surrounded by welfare receiving criminals.  I didn't really have an example of someone with a good work ethic as a foundation to build on.  I hope I am providing one for my kids who are growing up in a very different environment.  I know a lot of parents try to hide the sins of their past.  I go the other direction and am open and honest about the choices I made, I tell them about the circumstances and the results.

As for last weeks commitments...
4/4
We had some very intense, heavy lifting sessions in the gym.  I would like to be 200lbs. at the end of 2017 and be sub 14% BF.

Not sure how many to count... one solid run, two mediocre "resistance" sessions one of which was so mediocre

Made up for it on Saturday with a killer bike ride. Three of the five were cramping really bad. One of them was simplytheresa... but she still outpedalled two young males. The organizer billed it as a two-hour ride. I think we finally straggled in at 5.5 hours.

This is an interesting side topic.

Probably should have broken that off - various interesting aspects. Your perspective and RC's are interesting to me. Both very different from mine for very different reasons.

It sounds like you're a good example to demonstrate that you make your destiny. I'm grateful for having had good role models early in life. It makes things soooo much easier (work, marriage, finances). There's probably nothing you'll do for your kids that's more important.

Well for what its worth, I think you are right to. Good decision, and I am sure not always easy.

I have always been lucky... Puritan Work ethic rings bells with me too. I never thought I had a silver spoon, but I did.  It does not matter where you are, there are always wealthier people about. At the school I went to, I was the poorest. My Dad was an engineer, working for Rolls Royce, and my friends Dads were the people that owned the big companies. In reality if you are born in the west, I think you have a silver spoon from birth... at present.

So yes Ergo, I agree It makes life easier in some ways. But also, for me it means there is a responsibility to help those who are in need. did you get the Desert Island Discs?

I meant to tell you - yes, I did. At your suggestion I started with the Bill Gates episode and found it really interesting. I actually had a friend who lived in a single-wide trailer in the trailer park who, like Bill Gates, spent one summer reading the entire World Book Encyclopedia and then skipped a grade at about the same age Gates read the encyclopedia. Made we wonder what happened to him (we moved not long after). I've downloaded a couple more and look forward to listening. Open to recommendations.

That is so tricky :)  I dont Know how much is about knowing the "screen" person first. Personally I really like Hugh Laurie, Dawn French (She did a sitcom over here called the vicar of Dibley: here is a favourite clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJpoOlCbBrw)

There are not many, but I find it really fun.

BTW I am finally 1/4 of the way through A Deepness in the Sky. Really enjoying it.. Sue could not put it down .

You're almost done with the tough time of year, so I bet you get there in the next couple of months.

My gym is closed Christmas, so I am going to have to count a Monday workout as this week even though technically it will be 3/4 this week and 5/4 next.

Well done RC, almost there!  Sweat like a jockey and you could probably make it !

last week was 4 runs, 2 tennis. A great week. But just about to start the third day of heavy entertaining of the extended family, so some spoiling done.

LM, seems to me you are managing Christmas better than me!  I have just rolled over, and happy to get out the other side, and pick up again best I can. :-[

For me: 4/4 - Saturday was a short, slow ski tour with friends, but Sunday was a nice, long ski tour also with friends.

Best off all, lots of variation - decent weight session (first in a long time), nice mt bike ride, a skate-ski outing and a rock climbing outing.
