ukgimp, that's a good list.

After reading that book (above) is I would plan to extend the time period of self isolation in a pandemic to 21 to 29 days.  If the pandemic is bad enough that you have lost power for a long time during your initial 14 days, it's going to take some more days to restore essential services and reopen and restock grocery stores etc.

So if I were preparing now, I'd stock up for 14 days first.  Once that is done I'd lay in enough supplies for another week.

Good news:
I have a daughter who is admin at a 100-patient nursing home. She has also been selected to be on the state's emergency preparedness board (after shepherding her patients & staff through the eye of the last hurricane).  Anyway, based on this thread, I tipped her to stock up on masks & toilet paper.  She received one extra shipment of masks before the vendors started back-ordering and future shipments will be subject to rationing.  Staff will be ordering extra toilet paper today.

The bad news is that the CDC told nursing home admins to move to "pandemic preparedness" mode.

Yep, at the big hospital here. I have a lot of friends who are doctors and nurses at that hospital. They have a pretty cool airborne diseases ward in the hospital there and is one of only 10 in the country with that sort of ward.

The data looking  like children don't get hit very hard by the virus, maybe up to 80% show little or no symptoms.

https://www.livescience.com/why-kids-missing-coronavirus-cases.html

Quote
Youth can certainly contract the virus. Among the infected are at least two newborns, according to Chinese health officials. But few children are among those sick enough to be diagnosed with the coronavirus, according to an article published Feb. 5 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. According to the data analyzed in that article ó and numbers are changing quickly as the outbreak evolves ó the median age of patients skews older, between 49 and 56 years old.

So, this is good and bad, that means that kids could be passing it among each other and then bring it home without showing symptoms. In North America (and probably the UK & EU to) schools spread communicable diseases like the flu and common colds.

COVID-19 Fatality Rate by AGE:
AGEDEATH RATE
80+ years old  14.8%
70-79 years old  8.0%
60-69 years old   3.6%
50-59 years old   1.3%
40-49 years old   0.4%
30-39 years old   0.2%
20-29 years old   0.2%
10-19 years old   0.2%
0-9 years old      no fatalities

Also, having a pre-existing condition increases the fatality rate.

COVID-19 Fatality Rate by COMORBIDITY:
PRE-EXISTING CONDITION DEATH RATE
Cardiovascular disease  10.5%
Diabetes  7.3%
Chronic respiratory disease  6.3%
Hypertension 6.0%
Cancer 5.6%
no pre-existing conditions 0.9%

Families with seniors and people with compromised health need to be particularly careful.

They're still scrambling to figure out transmission paths.

"Two of those passengers without symptoms tested positive, and were transferred to the hospital for further evaluation and monitoring. Although one developed a faint rash and a mild sore throat, both remained well and fever-free seven days after hospital admission"

Coronavirus infection may be spread by people without symptoms, mounting evidence suggests

>without symptoms

This makes it hard to contain the spread and explains why governments are quietly raising their alert status.

I read somewhere that the US has significantly fewer hospital beds than we did in the 1970's. And it doesn't help that many hospitals are chronically understaffed.

Yep. Just like the Flu. We build hospitals like this every year.
