True, I wonder what the graph would show without a worldwide lockdown..

The thing is, all these charts are simply calculating deaths - that we know of - from Covid-19.  And those numbers are off because of failed testing and unavailability of testing.

But none of these charts take into account long term costs of surviving Covid - 19.  There are going to be a lot of people walking around with permanent lung, kidney, liver, intestinal, damage and shortened productive life spans because of Covid19.  These people are going to need life long treatment and all that comes at a cost to both the survivors and to society as well.  We have not even begun to figure out the costs.

Covid19 is not the flu where the body count is the measure.  Covid19 leaves far to many survivors with real, lasting damage.

That is true, but think of what that chart would look like if people worried about heart disease and diabetes the way people worried* about Covid.

*Past tense, because I think littleman is correct - social-distancing fatigue is setting in.

Bran, those are very good points that many are overlooking.   Something like 20-30% of all infected have permanent lung damage.

>x10?

>social-distancing fatigue

I think we're going to get a lot closer to the unmitigated numbers soon in the US.  I was listening to our governor and he basically is giving up at this point.  We had several bench marks for phase II, of which we only made one.  The state is out of money, so f### it I guess.

This link may have been posted earlier, but it has been updated with a lot more information at the state and county level.  It now shows growth rates by county over time and hot spots.

One major difference: heart disease, diabetes etc. are serious but not infectious so your disease doesn't put others at risk.

I wasn't trying to suggest that people not try to do their part not to spread Covid. I was suggesting that if people felt just some of that urgency with respect to some other major killers, we could save many more lives.

I was talking to a friend this morning and told him that early on, I thought he was being reckless - having contractors come to his house, working with them side by side, going to the lumber yard every day, living life as if there were no pandemic. Then he was limiting contact, wearing a mask and being way more careful. I asked him what changed.

He said, "One day I was in town and I noticed that all the people who were ignoring all the rules and recommendations were the ignorant, ill-educated, ill-informed rednecks I knew. And I noticed that all the well-informed, thoughtful, well-educated people I knew were taking the threat seriously. I decided I was probably better off following the practice of the thoughtful, not the ignorant."
