Soooo, WCGW?

C.D.C. Calls On Schools to Reopen, Downplaying Coronavirus Risks - The New York Times
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/24/health/cdc-schools-coronavirus.html

This is the new battleground. As mask-wearing becomes normalized and as the school year starts to loom large in people's minds, this is where the fight is going. And realistically, this actually is an important and debatable issue.

It seems that the root problem is that people want to make blanket rules. I'm looking at a 1.33% positivity rate in our county with widespread testing happening now. We have had one death and currently have only one hospitalization for a population of 18,000.

https://mariposacounty.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/89621bfcef274dc89c27642e9be8d28b

Couple that with evidence that child to adult transmission seems to be comparatively rare (see the Sean O'Leary interview below), and there seems to be a lot of desire on the part of parents across the political spectrum here to put kids back in school in the fall. There is some debate on how that will happen - Will kids have to wear masks all day?  Will they be tested monthly? etc, etc. But most people think we can come up with guidelines that would work (despite the strong local faction that says the virus is a hoax and that it's all a ploy to implant tracking chips in us).

In a place like Houston, which had a 25% positivity rate last I checked, it seems like going back to school is crazy.

Meanwhile...

From July 9
CDC Director Says Agency Wont Revise School Reopening Guidelines Despite Trump Pressure
https://www.forbes.com/sites/elanagross/2020/07/09/cdc-director-says-agency-wont-revise-school-reopening-guidelines---despite-trump-pressure/#67e7ea14c55c

So much for that.

And then there is the fracas over the American Academy of Pediatrics statement and update to that statement. This was a key talking point on the town meeting with my US Rep. He cited* the AAP statement 5-7 times in the 40 minutes I was on the call, always presenting it as though it were a strong, unqualified endorsement for sending the kids back to school, regardless of Covid.

Of course, the actual AAP statement has caveats like "if possible" and "following public health guidelines." After seeing how their statement was being cited* by the administration and getting pushback because they had not given any consideration to educators and school workers, they have walked back their statement with a new one.

AAP walks back their original statement
https://www.chalkbeat.org/2020/7/10/21320020/school-reopening-american-academy-pediatrics-trump-devos-statement
https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/07/10/889848834/nations-pediatricians-walk-back-support-for-in-person-school

And Forbes portrays this as "slamming" Trump, which seems out of all proportion to the actual events:
"Pediatrics Association Slams Trump Argument For Reopening Schools"
https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2020/07/10/pediatrics-association-slams-trump-argument-for-reopening-schools/#530c10ec718f

But an article that is actual helpful in understanding the controversy: an interview with Sean O'Leary, a pediatrician, Covid survivor, father of two school-age children and one of the authors of the statement:
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/30/us/coronavirus-schools-reopening-guidelines-aap.html

And as if from nowhere 4 new cases pop up in Da Nang, coastal city roughly in the middle of Vietnam. The first community transmissions for 100 days.

The response has been swift, this is well worth a tread and is somewhat of a contrast with other countries (you know who you are).

This is most likely just a USA issue: Methanol in Hand sanitizers.

So... once again, a microbiologist who concludes that there is hardly any risk of getting Covid from surfaces and suggests that people spend more time focusing on avoiding droplets and aerosols, rather than sanitizing light switches and groceries.

Quote
"In a study in which the authors tried to mimic actual conditions in which a surface might be contaminated by a patient, no viable SARS-CoV was detected on surfaces... In my opinion, the chance of transmission through inanimate surfaces is very small, and only in instances where an infected person coughs or sneezes on the surface, and someone else touches that surface soon after the cough or sneeze (within 12 h)."

https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals/laninf/PIIS1473-3099(20)30561-2.pdf

Also, coverage of it in the popular press
Hygiene Theater Is a Huge Waste of Time
People are power scrubbing their way to a false sense of security.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/07/scourge-hygiene-theater/614599

The author of that article interviews another microbiologist who studies disease transmission, Donald Schaffner.

Quote
Schaffner told me, In the entire peer-reviewed COVID-19 literature, Ive found maybe one truly plausible report, in Singapore, of fomite transmission. And even there, it is not a slam-dunk case.

More on the methanol in hand sanitizers.

Mounting poisonings, blindness, deaths as toxic hand sanitizers flood market

FDA Updates on Hand Sanitizers with Methanol  -- the list of brands keeps growing.

Turns out we have a bunch of containers on the list, fortunately we haven't been using them yet!
