This is interesting...
10,000 mink are dead in Covid-19 outbreaks at US fur farms after virus believed spread by humans

Quote
Dr. Keith Paulson with the UW-Madison Veterinary School Diagnostic Laboratory told CNN affiliate WISN that he noted "significant mortality in the mink" and that three workers there had recovered from the virus after displaying "mild to moderate clinical signs."

...

Mink, which are closely related to weasels, otter and ferrets, appear to suffer similar symptoms to humans. Difficulty breathing and crusting around the eyes are usually seen, but the virus progresses rapidly, and most infected mink are dead by the next day, according to Taylor.
It's unclear what makes mink such a susceptible species, while others appear to be unaffected.

I am not a mink, but I tested positive today.

Yikes! I hope you're one of the mild cases. Any idea where/how you caught it?

I hope you are okay! If it's any consolation, I know a handful of people who tested positive and the worst of them had roughly a flu and one of them had almost no symptoms (and he tested positive twice before getting a negative and tested positive for the antibodies b/c he wanted to be a plasma donor).

Keep us posted.

It appears that the title of this thread applies more in the US than anywhere else.  Of the countries surveyed, we are the one with the most people who did not learn to share in kindergarten

Thanks for the wishes.

From The Economist email newsletter. God Bless America. Once upon a time, we were the Arsenal of Democracy and the funders of the Marshall Plan and the people needed to be coaxed and cajoled to that point by leaders with vision, and the world was a better place for it (in my biased opinion as an American, of course). Making America Selfish Again is not the path to greatness.

Update - this is the page it comes from:

One in three people want preferential access to a covid-19 vaccine
https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2020/10/08/one-in-three-people-want-preferential-access-to-a-covid-19-vaccine

Note that in the US it's not "one in three" but closer to 44%

"deaths between March 1 and Aug. 1 increased 20% compared to previous years -- maybe not surprising in a pandemic. But deaths attributed to COVID-19 only accounted for 67% of those deaths."

US: Total deaths recorded during the pandemic far exceed those attributed to COVID-19

I suppose it will be a couple of years before we really know the cost of Covid and can disentangle deaths due to Covid directly or indirectly (afraid to go to the ER or unable to get a bed in ICU or delayed cancer screening) and deaths due to lockdown itself (again, delaying cancer screening, but also overdoses and suicides) and deaths prevented by lockdown (car crashes).

Worth spending a few minutes on.

What is the microCOVID project?

This is a project to quantitatively estimate the COVID risk to you from your ordinary daily activities. We trawled the scientific literature for data about the likelihood of getting COVID from different situations, and combined the data into a model that people can use. We estimate COVID risk in units of microCOVIDs, where 1 microCOVID = a one-in-a-million chance of getting COVID.

Conclusions

People <65 years old have very small risks of COVID-19 death even in pandemic epicenters and deaths for people <65 years without underlying predisposing conditions are remarkably uncommon. Strategies focusing specifically on protecting high-risk elderly individuals should be considered in managing the pandemic.

Quote
Individuals with age <65 account for 4.5–11.2% of all COVID-19 deaths in European countries and Canada, 8.3–22.7% in the US locations, and were the majority in India and Mexico.

So the way I read that:   In India, most COVID deaths were for below 65.  So either people dying over 65 were not counted as Covid deaths, or there are fewer people over 65 in India.

In the UK, am estimate of around 350 people have died of covid, who were under 65 and had no other comorbidity.

We are back to how do we let it run hot, without getting the old involved. Particularly as those who suffer most are in poor demographics, with multiple occupancy (generational)  housing, and work in places where they are constantly in touch with lots of people.  IE Taxis, care, waitering etc etc.

I don't see how we can not let it run hotter though, for the furture health of the country. What we are doing now is bring it too its knees.
