Title: Global Government Surveillance Reform

Global Government Surveillance Reform (http://reformgovernmentsurveillance.com/)

hmmmm..... Part of me says they could have prevented all this surveillance in the first place by simply taking security matters more seriously. The technology to thwart a lot of this has been available for years.

That's true. But this isn't a cat that can't be put back in the bag. Yes, governments, especially the US govt, has a ton os surveillance data, but the efforts to improve encryption of data at the signatory companies will make it harder to collect going forward and eventually the existing data will "spoil".

The interesting question will be how the public responds when someone sets off a massive bomb at the Super Bowl and it turns out they organized the whole thing on Facebook, taking advantage of the latest encryption FB provides.

PS - I say "interesting", but in the ardent hope that we will never get the answer to that question, or a similar one, but the odds are that eventually there will be another massive bombing, eventually a large asteroid will hit the earth and eventually the Yellowstone Supercaldera will erupt again.

Wouldn't put it past them now to setup a false flag terrorist attack to justify further surveillance:

None of the data they gathered to date prevented anything, so I don't have high hopes for the future of such a program either.

To me the idea that we have to stop anything that could aid terrorists is wrong.   If you look at how western society has changed since 9/11 it's pretty clear that the terrorists won and their biggest allies have been western press and governments.   The whole point of terrorism is cause fear and disruption.  Well played Al Qaida.

Continuing to sign away our rights in the name of security doesn't stop them, it encourages them.   Wasn't the whole point in the 'allied' stance of recent years to protect freedom?   How does it make sense that we do that by giving up freedom??
