When will I be able to buy a self drive car?
« on: January 04, 2017, 04:26:51 PM »
Everyone round me rolls their eyes when i mention this, and say 10 years.  I think it will be sooner than that, but still have not quite got a feel for when.

What do you folks think?
I found this on the Nissan site:
Quote
In 2017, the Nissan Qashqai with ProPilot will become our first vehicle in Europe equipped with autonomous technology. The first model with ProPilot will come to Japan this year. The new Qashqai can drive autonomously and safely in a single lane in heavy traffic conditions on the highway.

In three years:
http://uk.businessinsider.com/report-10-million-self-driving-cars-will-be-on-the-road-by-2020-2015-5-6

I think these clarify the question to:

When will I be able to buy a Fully autonomous car?

3 years at a premium. 5 at an almost reasonable price. 7 for most 'standards' to have settled in and prices starting to be competitive.

I haven't figured out the advantages of a self-driving car versus just hopping in a taxi.

EVerything I hear points to 2021 as a target date.

I read something recently where a car guy was saying that in 2012 when he asked industry sources when we would see "level 5" (as defined by SAE) cars and they would say 20-30 years. Now they're all saying 2021 is a date that automakers are atually targeting.

just hopping in a taxi.
The taxi will be self driven. You will call for it in your phone, and get different rate quotes for speed of arrival. Taxis might then even reach rural areas and replace cars. I can see myself booking a car for 10am to town using Alexa. Boy that will be a confusing world though when I have dementia!

Level 5
looked it up, thanks

Actually once I started using the right search phrases, I see 2021 is planned as a big year for Ford as you say. They seem to be targeting fleets and Cat 4 first. I think Google is going for cat 5 to the public. Not found an predictions, but I think they have been at this for longer with more cash.

this is an interesting article, talking about the finance side. As everything seems to be disruptive to the economy, this will too:
https://techcrunch.com/2016/07/13/the-future-of-car-ownership-that-no-one-is-talking-about/

Then digging further, it seems Tesla and google are taking completely different approaches:
https://electrek.co/2016/04/11/google-self-driving-car-tesla-autopilot/
Tesla claiming 47 million miles of data.... while google claims "only" 2 million miles.

86 percent of new car sales in the U.S. are financed. Without individual financing products, car sales don’t happen. Financing props up the entire auto industry. In fact, the U.S. is far more reliant on auto finance than other countries. In China, where current new car sales outpace the U.S., only 26 percent of new car sales are financed.

If Uber and Lyft take over, then that finance in the US will be different.  I am guessing the Uk is similarly structured, but I have  not checked.

Where I live a pair of comfortable shoes is more convenient than a taxi.  The bar is pretty low for self drivers.
