This week, Berners-Lee will launch, Inrupt, a startup that he has been building, in stealth mode, for the past nine months. Backed by Glasswing Ventures, its mission is to turbocharge a broader movement afoot, among developers around the world, to decentralize the web and take back power from the forces that have profited from centralizing it. In other words, it’s game on for Facebook, Google, Amazon. For years now, Berners-Lee and other internet activists have been dreaming of a digital utopia where individuals control their own data and the internet remains free and open.

This may well be the most significant news of the year or even longer.  The long term implications for the silos are huge.  This is exciting stuff.  Finally.

Get your Solid apps out there pronto folks.  It's "firstus with the mostus" time.

Excellent find Mackin!

Solid is the technically potent open-source platform built to decentralize the web. Inrupt is the company that’s helping to fuel Solid’s success.

Solid was created by the inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Its mission is to reshape the web as we know it. Solid will foster a new breed of applications with capabilities above and beyond anything that exists today.

I like the concept: keep all your personal data, music, photos in one secure cloud hosting account and then you control what apps can access it.  And you can move the data to your choice of hosts.

This relates to what Ergophobe and I were talking about in another thread.

I used to think Tim Berners-Lee was just a guy who happened to be on a project that took off. But over the years, I've come to respect his vision more and more.

I remember way back in the Netscape days when he lamented browsers that did not include editors, because he had envisioned a huge, participatory bazaar and I know he has always been worried by the "closing of the web" (not his phrase, but my conception of it by analogy to the "closing of the range" in the US in the 1870s and 1880s.

It looks like he finally figured out how to push his vision not just as an evangelist, but with a tangible offering.

I grabbed one nickname. So far.

I grabbed a nick too.  Poked around.  Reminds me of Glitch, once I registered I had no clue, it was just a minimalist clusterwank of the incomprehensible shown to the clueless.

It's a little rough, but the instructions for creating your own Solid server are not very complicated (especially if you're already used to installing with npm). That's a good sign.

Problem here is that in order to be useful you'd have to get everyone to move from the Google/Microsoft/Amazon world and adopt this. I like the idea of controlling your info, but I don't see mass adoption in this project's near future. Would we just be putting our eggs into another seemingly altruistic basket? Why not? They seem to have a "don't be evil" philosophy...wait, I've heard that somewhere before...

Actually, you would have to get the ten people you care about most, right?

The problem is, I don't know how to get my stuff into my Pod and I have no software or apps to draw it out once it's there.

Plus I have a competing (sort of) altruistic cloudverse being created by the https://e.foundation/ which I fully intend to try, so I don't want to get too locked into any other ecosystem.
