I am not a fan-boy, but I think it is worth noting a couple of points.
They were the first to mass-produce an electric vehicle. Without their efforts we would still be talking about
Who Killed the Electric Car. Because of this a lot of people think electric car = Tesla.
These things are everywhere in the Bay Area, a place with a lot of money and influence. There is definitely a lot of hype around the company; Musk with Tesla remind me a lot of Jobs with Mac. The Tesla fans are kinda culty and I think that needs factored in here.
The established manufacturers may ultimately produce more low end electric/autonomous cars but I really can't see a future where Tesla isn't at least making high-end vehicles.
Added: We shouldn't put too much stock in GM decision making process
