They discuss that in this podcast

Of course, it's a tiny amount of money, but people keep throwing out geoengineering options as if we actually know how to do it. It's all very theoretical and mostly not validated empirically yet. So the idea is to at least start that research.

There are also a lot of problems that you don't get to just by "climate intervention" (as opposed to "geoengineering") - one of the main non-climate problems is ocean acidification. The aerosol solutions don't address that, but as much as warming or more so, that's the big problem for the oceans.

The salt one is particularly interesting to me as the 'ship tracks' have already been detected.

Like you said, at least it's a start.

We need to buy some time. It's worth a shot.

Sad to say it, but yes. There is no way we stay below 2C change with just reductions. We have the technology to do so, but we do not have the political will.  I heard David Roberts recently say: "We have the technology to solve poverty too. It's called money. And yet we still have poverty." We will not act until we have no other choice but to act and at that point, we will need geoengineering solutions to be on the table.

It's going to suck, but reality is a harsh master.
