I cried when I read this.  I was the geek girl too.  And I love her Princess Leia hat.

Wow... real tear jerker.

My niece - a very well-balanced geek girl who had some good geek friends in high school, put it really well, in terms of teasing. She said "I don't care what the cool kids are into. Why does it matter to them what the geek kids are into? We don't want to be part of their group. We just want to be left alone."

Of course, that requires having found a few soul mates, but when I heard her say that, I thought "She's got a future ahead of her, that girl!"

We have had an anti-bullying program for a while and things are starting to change - at least in a some schools.

I have a close friend whose daughter has had a fellow student who was clearly Gay, (or at least 'heading down that path'), from the age of 8. She says he has had very little bullying, and has a network of straight mates who have looked after him on the occasions it has happened. They are now all 16-17 and he is comfortable in his skin and seemingly well adjusted.

FWIW, she reckons another reason was the popularity of 'Little Britain', specifically the 'I'm a  Lady; and 'the only gay in the village' sketches - she may be right.

It isn't perhaps typical, but it is reassuring that it can happen at all I guess

Yeah.

I think we get inundated with so much bad news, so much hate, fear and anger, about everything and about the Internets.  It is nice to be reminded that: 1. there are good things in the world, 2. there are good people, and that 3. the Internet can be used for positive things too.

Yep...People are generally GOOD.

But people don't tune into the media to hear about good people.

Ahh, THAT's what the Katie comment in the last Thinkgeek newsletter was.

Excellent story.  :D
