Side story:
Two kids I grew up with ended up being competing pot dealers in their early adult years. They lived on the same street, knew each other their entire lives and use to play together. I'll call them Steve and Jose. Steve was a big boy, Jose was small and skinny. Anyway, Steve and Jose had a dispute about who got to sell where. Jose, being smaller, gathered up a bunch of his friends and knocked on Steve's door. Steve looked out his window and saw a half dozen guys. Nervous, and not wanting to go out empty handed he grabbed a baseball bat. Steve and Jose started shouting at each other and one of Jose's friends pulled out a knife. Steve wanted to de-escalate, so he threw his bat on the ground. Immediately after that one of Jose's friends picked up the bat and struck Steve's head. Steve ended up in a comma for a month and woke up even dimmer than he was before.
There is a lot of stupid to go around in that story. It is just one small consequence of the failed war on drugs policies of the twentieth century.

I have mixed feelings about that.
I think it's fair to say that hallucinogenic mushrooms were one of the things I used to self-medicate for depression in my late teens, early twenties. I think it might have even worked (obviously, I didn't do double blind tests on myself). And one of the benefits of having it come up during a security clearance investigation in the 1980s, is that the government already knows... so now you do too.
But one of the things that concerns me about decriminalization is that it is still typically criminal to sell, but not to buy. So you create a demand, but the supplier can go to jail.
It's like the old laws on prostitution (and possibly current - I don't know what the laws are) where prostitutes get arrested and clients mostly skate. That seems completely backwards, especially when so many of the women are coerced. Certainly, the supplier/customer power dynamic is different than in the case of, say, tobacco.
The drug violence and human trafficking problems would go away if the demand went away.

You have a good points about decriminalized vs. legal and punishing the users vs punishing the sellers.
We have had other threads on the legalization of hard drugs, but basically I hold the opinion that they should be legal with a lot of restrictions. Sellers should have to be licensed and have inspections. They should not be able to advertise. They should be taxed heavily and those taxes should go to support addiction treatment. I'd also make the sellers responsible for making sure the streets stay clean, say if needles start to be found within 5 miles of an establishment then it would lose its license.
Of course, if the world thought like me prostitutes would be in unions and have pension funds.

We are getting legal weed, it's just a matter of time. I also liken it to current day bread and circus, where it's the bread.

I just found out the real reason we're dropping marijuana as a drug... we can't fill low-end jobs due to mandatory drug tests (truck drivers, nurses aids). My daughter runs a big nursing home and has to drop otherwise excellent candidates with good references and job history because of failing mj test. Nurses aids (CNAs) are in such critical shortage that her company is running recruiting excursions to US territories, particularly Puerto Rico.
