Quick & pretty well done video showing identity theft.

...and this doesn't even show Google searches.

I just tracked down a guy this week from his posts in assorted online forums (my daughter might need a local smarthome programmer for the nursing home).  Took me about 20 minutes to find his full name, residence address, past address, names of 2 of his children, where one of those kids went to university, other personal tidbits. And all I was trying to do was verify that he lived near a particular NC city.

As Jason said... I've mostly given up. Your best defense is probably legally changing your name to James Smith. I'm not sure how well that works if you're female, because there aren't many female James Smiths. Mary Smith would be the best you could do then, which is much less effective
