My latest project -- just for fun.
« on: January 04, 2021, 10:03:26 PM »
I dug my Great Grandmother's Singer out of the basement.  It was built in 1892 and purrs along like it was just made.  The last two years has just been grueling, and I just needed something fun to take my mind off it.

I tried to make a video that didn't suck and might even get watched to the end.  That's tough to do with a sewing video.  Be brutally honest.

I watched it to the end and it was fun!  For me, I was glad that you didn't get to technical cos I know nothing about sewing machines but I liked the unnarrated views of the cleanup because it was interesting to see mechanical bits under the hood.

How in the world did you know how to thread the string through so many places on that machine?

I think there is a sewing machine very much like that one in the basement of my late grandmother's house.  It has the cast iron and the foot thing to make it go.

I think the dress and hat came out great

Very cool Heather!  My in-laws have an old foot powered Singer in their home.  I have a soft spot for old mechanical technology -- especially those that don't rely on electricity.   In my garage I have a couple of chain making machines from the 1930s.  I was using them in the late 90s to make sterling silver chain by the foot.  I haven't run them in years, but I can't part with them.

You should fix it up and see if you can make it work.  These old machines are all mechanical and basically need a cleaning and grease. I also love that they were made to be seen and not just used.  Even the inside place to put the shuttle bobbin is made with graceful curves that are pleasing to the eye.

I do too.  I could see the Zoomers getting into something like this as well because it's a "clean" source of power.  I'd LOVE to see your chain making machines in action!  I'm getting ready to make some dresses from the 1930s, and might just need a necklace to accessorize!

Very nice. I especially like some of the closeup shots of the machinery. There's a real beauty there in those old parts.

I have no interest in sewing, but I watched the whole thing. I shared it with my wife who was heard to exclaim, "Wow!" at one point and then, "Whoa!!" when you were (I think) winding the bobbin. She just got her first sewing machine and has been maxing out our crappy internet watching sewing videos.

Yours is definitely more on the artsy/mood side. Very cool. When you say you want to do more, are you thinking of tutorial style videos?

>Artsy or tutorial

A bit of both, I think. Mostly, I’m doing this for fun, so we’ll see where it leads.

>winding the bobbin
I love winding bobbins on this machine: it is so relaxing to watch. The gears are the size of hairs.

Tell your wife to look up Bernadette Banner on YouTube.

I basically copied her style.

This is the user’s manual that I found in the drawer.

It has beautiful illustrations.

Indeed, those drawings are cool. It's funny to think that they would have put in the effort to make an instruction manual beautiful.

Fun and cool!

I used to have my grandmother's sewing machine but alas, it disappeared when we had renters for a couple of years. The brand was Raymond.

I console myself with the thought that if the power grid died I could rig up some sort of belt to drive the wheel on my mother's Elna sewing machine which I use regularly.

I've had some golden bonding moments with grandkids, teaching them some basic sewing and design skills. Note that I said grandkids, not just granddaughters! They've all done simple projects, mostly things that we can make with straight lines and rectangles, with special attention to cutting things so the patterns will match on the finished project. Even three-year-old Kate steered some of the stitching on her special pink tote bag! We've also done toy repairs ranging from stitching a ripped seam in a stuffed dinosaur's back to sewing new button eyes on a stuffed rabbit.

I think it's a valuable life lesson to cultivate both the skills and the confidence make things and fix things.

I never thought of it, but those old machines are perfect for people trying to live off the grid.  I wonder if there is a niche market there?

With covid lockdowns I would think sewing would be gaining a new popularity.

Indeed, and the prices of basic sewing tools and supplies have been rising steadily over the past year. Even simple needles cost twice as much.

@buckworks, It's good to hear this confirmed.  I can see where sewing machines (and knowhow) would help pass the time in lockdown plus provide a real practical benefit for family clothing.

I remember where I got this thought:  Back in Spring 2020 during the peak of the first Corona 19 wave, when manufactured masks could not be had for medical personnel let alone the general public, (mostly) women were pulling their sewing machines out of the basement and heroically making masks for distribution as fast as they could.

I'm kinda glad the practice has stuck.  I think maybe we all need to be more self reliant.

Yes. YES!

Even if we don't always do things for ourselves, it's good to have tools and knowhow so we could if we had to.
