Seems like the term has went the way of the web ring and <marquee>

Makes me feel old since I still use the term.  Does anybody still make a website for non-commercial purposes anymore or have we totally pimped out the web?

>non-commercial

I'm making one for a local park (behind my house) that's designated green space that the council are wanting to build a school on. Just started it this morning. Took a free template and sorted the nav, domain cost a fiver and will host on a VPS I already have sites on. Going for traditional flat file, WP would be more hassle for me.

The thought had crossed my mind about borrowing any link juice is gets but nah! best not.

Great idea.

I keep meaning to make a small static site about a Tiny Library that is in one of our parks but I keep procrastinating.

I like the term "webmaster" - it implies breadth without depth and I would say that describes my knowledge. Of course, the thing is there are no webmaster *jobs* anymore, because most jobs depend on depth and not breadth.

I think I saw that there is a .guru domain now and that they really smack you around for high renewal fees after the first year.  Something I can only applaud. :-)

Are there more actively managed non-corporate websites today than there were say in 2005?  Is there less of an independent web presence today, or is it just completely overshadowed by eCommerce and social media.

I'm still a big fan of static pages.  I guess "webmaster" falling in popular use has more to do with not needing to know HTML to make a website these days.  For that matter you don't even need a website to have a web presence.

If you count blogs then maybe yes.  There is an independent web, but it's almost completely swamped in the SERP's by the commercial web.  There are some really unique websites out there that are not just blogs, but you can find them more easily in small directories or surfing the web than with Google or Bing.  I consider this to be the great failing of the search engines that remain.

I think it's just rare on a site of any size, that a "webmaster" can do it. I remember when universities had *a* webmaster. My first e-comm site was the Sierra Club bookstore, which was maintained (sort of) by two of us working one afternoon a week. Grey backgrounds. Table layouts. All that stuff.

Flash forward. Maybe 10 years ago, I was at a conference where the guy who ran the UCB or Stanford sites spoke. He had a Drupal multisite install with a couple thousand independent sites running on the Pantheon platform. There was a whole team to help departments maintain their sites, but nobody was a "webmaster." You had content creators and site admins in the departments, sysadmins managing the system but doing no content maintenance, a helper team who could help the departments with their content and layout and so forth.

For most sites of any size, there just isn't a person who "masters" them.

As sites grow in complexity, you have a design team, a UX design team, a FED team, a backend team, a DB team, a devops team, a content strategy team, etc. On a medium site, this is likely to be just 2-3 people total. On a big site, it could be a dozen to hundreds.

At this point, I know very, very few people who do both design and technical stuff. I just did a site without a designer... it came out nice, but it was a lot less efficient and to my eye still has a lot of things a real designer would balk at.
