I am about to change the gasket and wiring harness for my LandRover Defender TD5 - not idiotically designed as one piece though but otherwise doing exactly the same job - and it is about $60 equivalent (genuine parts).

Edit: guess I should mention that the failure mode with this particular harness when older is that engine oil migrates down the cabling as the seal breaks down and either escapes at the plug connector right behind the fan which blows it everywhere or in some instances has been known to find its way right down to the ecu which is under the passenger seat in the cabin and not normally a place you expect to find engine oil:)

Only British engineering can make a car leak engine oil into the cab.

A few or more years ago my friend Robert, the much-acclaimed King Of The Land Rovers, was up in NYC fixing some major Peoplesoft meltdown when he saw an ad for a parts-only Defender out on Long Island.  He called the owner and found out that the Defender was actually in nice shape but had quit running and the owner had spent tons of money trying to get it fixed to no avail so he was dumping it.  Robert took a cab out there, bought it for <$1k, borrowed some hand tools, started it, and drove it 7 hours to his home in Virginia.
