"Just 38 percent of respondents say they are mobile with the resources, ability, and inclination to make a move. "

Must be SEOs

Or don't live in NC, SC, OR, WA.  The rest of the US sucks.

>OR, WA

These 2 are at least green with trees & foliage in their coastal areas. Somewhat temperate. Residents are wack, though. hhh

Those would probably be my top 4 states as well. There are other places I would want to try short term but very few others I would want to be long term.

Every time we talk about moving, the question of "where" comes up. So far, my top choices are all in France. Wife doesn't speak French and we don't have visas, so that's a challenge.

In the US, the options all seem super expensive or far from the types of recreation we love.

I wouldn't want to do the winters in OR & WA, and I wouldn't want to do the Summers in NC & SC.

Love Vancouver BC.
The taxes trouble me.

When you look at taxes in Canada remember that they cover the majority of our health care costs. Be sure to compare our taxes with your taxes PLUS your cost of medical insurance.

... must resist screed about how much better Canadians are served by our health care system ...

Picky, picky, picky.

OK, specifically, the Olympic peninsula area of OR|WA.  Home of the only North American rain forest, IIRC.  Some of the coastal towns are just out of the rain belt.

>heat

It's not the heat, it's the humidity. hhh.

It'll make a man out of you.  If you're a wuss, then look at the "Isothermal Region" of NC in the foothills.  Due to the lay of the land, temps stay fairly moderate year round.

Me, I **NEED** water. Lots & lots of water.  BIG water. Anything less than a mile wide is a creek and barely counts.

Plus there's this

Scroll down to the violent crimes section...

I need enough water to drink and grow some trees. That low threshold rules out large tracts of the Western US. It will rule out much, much larger parts of the Western US by 2050. I don't need an ocean or the Mississippi River, but I do need water security... which is yet another source of low-level anxiety

If you live West of the 100th Meridian and you are are not worried about water, you missed John Wesley Powell's 1878 memo on the subject. If you're future oriented, you might want to pad that with several more degrees.

>Mississippi River

A creek by coastal Carolina standards. A loooong creek, but otherwise lacking.

>ocean

I don't really care for oceans or, ironically (given my old resort domains), beaches.   I like big, broad rivers & sounds.  Depth isn't a big issue, waist deep is fine.

>trees

I also need trees & greenery. To suit me, the area is going to need around 3 inches of precipitation per month, year-round.  My area averages over 4 inches a month.

I also need semi-rural. Farms are a plus, but I wouldn't want it to be all farms. Our nearby urban areas are nice to have for services but are also massively depressing with so many people and too much pavement.

BC is pretty amazing in the Summer and honestly I think much of much of Oregon is perfect that time of year too.  RC, I don't mind heat, but I do mind the humidity.  I think the humidity is partially responsible for the South's obesity problem -- it keeps everyone indoors.
