Subliminal Advertising
« on: November 27, 2010, 12:00:52 AM »
I have been seeing a bit of this lately, despite it being illegal.

Being the sad f###er scientist I have been actually recording the TV with an HD video camera.

I got two single frame ads during the showing of the mentalist, channel 5, UK 9pm Friday.

Here is one such frame.

Has anyone else seen these?

I am no expert but i was always lead to believe that it was illegal

as a young lad in the 60's i recall my dad talking about a test they had carried out at the pictures with kiaora orange and a single frame was flashed during the first half of the pictures ( yeah it used to be in 2 halves if your as old as me) and more kiaora orange was sold during the interval so it ended up being banned

other test were carried out to I am just relating to this one as an example i was told about, maybe illegal is the wrong word to use and companies followed guidelines which maybe being manipulated who knows ?

>>Are you sure you arent just blinking lots and get just the one frame?

As I said , I am a scientist by training, doing 4 years of experiments after my first degree. I know I can make things like propellors appear to slow down by blinking and about setting strobes lights up to get make things appear motionless when really doing 2000rpm.

I will upload the video I have.

Here are some of my thoughts on it.

1. I have facebooked it and no one has responed in recent weeks.
2. I have a 100 or 200 htz tv, but more than than the 50 that terestrial TV is transmitted with. It does does not appear to get recored on the Topfield HDD.
3. This only seems to occur on channel 4/5.
4. My gf has seen them also, but not on any other channel and she like Emmerdale so I suspect that something would have been noticed at other time if it was a TV fault
5. I have seen these mainly in the program itself but also with the TV program advertising you get just before the program restarts.
6. The one I have captured above has a similar advert a few miniutes earlier. But I cannot say this is so for the others.
7. Another one I can remember is for Boots the chemist, and Carslberg think

I can only think of the following options right now.

1. There is some subliminal TV advertising going on
2. My TV is faulty and is extrapolating to 100/200 htz it is somehow saving a frame and accidently mixing it it.
3. The broadcasters are slipping them into the odd frames withing the 100htz so that they are not recorded.
4. Someone is "hacking" the system, like on the film "used cars" where they talk over the presidents speach.

Still thinking of others.

Will post the link and more info as I find it.

There was another one earlier on during the program.

I have frozen the frames as it was very quick.

In this second example there is a Sky advert about 3 minutes earlier and 2 frames of this have managed to find their way into the middle of the program.

Discuss?

>>OK I'll stop taking the p##s now Ive seen pics

lol

Freeview via 1  x Topfield TF5800 PVR  - 250Gb

I have not noticed this on other TV's in the house but they are only 50htz

I do have another LG HDD, with full upscaling and other BS, but I have not used that much, there are lots of cables to sort.

The TV is linked to the Toppy by Cat5 wiring and the http://www.avnex.co.uk/

TV = LG47LD690

I hear you with the TV/Freeview screwing up, but why only channel 4/5?

let me guess, did you pay over the odds for one that says Sony?

I will see what I can do although it is a bit of a hassle.

>>transmitted over RF with transmitters at the hub, with receivers at each screen.

Not sure to be honest. I know this system has infrared link ups for the controls but I thought it was all hard wired. Then out the other end is CAT5 > RJ45 > special cable to audio visual input.

True enough it is an unusual setup but I wont have time this week to test it and I go away for a week after that. I will test and remove add things to isolate/eliminate them.

>>Geeks

Indeed, I know nothing, I get lost with some the discussions, but in my defence I reckon I know more about crushing rocks than them :-)
