The End of the Age of Paternity Secrets
« on: June 19, 2019, 06:44:12 PM »
I was just thinking about this the other day.  We've seen cold-case killers found, but the flip side is that a fellows are going to get a 'You're my dad from a one-night stand X decades ago!" call.

A friend of mine who teaches genetics at college has had a lot of uncomfortable discussions way before 23 and Me just when doing the blood type unit and students realize that their blood type is an impossible combo based on the blood types of their parents.

Though sometimes, blood tests are wrong apparently, and so some are false... but some aren't. He wasn't prepared to do that sort of counseling when he decided on academia versus industry

Last summer a friend told me that a genetic service turned up a close match with some people he didn't know. He got curious and reached out to them. They didn't know about him either.

It turned out that his [grandfather? great-grandfather?] had not been lost at sea in a Newfoundland fishing accident, he had faked his own death. He made his way west and eventually started a new family in North Dakota.
