The nation's most generous tippers and the SCUM BAGS

And the city with the deepest pockets? Pittsburgh topped the list with an average rate of 17.6 percent. Cleveland ranked last at 14 percent, though the ranking's bottom seven slots were rounded out by such restaurant hot spots as Miami, San Francisco, Washington, Los Angeles, New York and Boston.

I remember in Wilmington someone saying they still tip the same for poor service. Now I get the custom and all that sh##, and I do regularly tip in the UK as point of order.

However, this tipping poor service is doing the waiter / waitress a huge disservice. They will never learn or improve as they think their special brand of sh## service is still worthy. Meaning everyone they serve will get the same sh##.

This is how the human race stagnates :-)

I would love to know if some of the on-table tablet based payment systems are actually costing servers money. They usually have an option to top 15%, 18%, or 20%. I know I have seen these at places like Red Robin and Chilis and different food trucks.

First off, that makes it easy to tip bad, adequate, or good service different amounts easily. When it is push button easy I would think more people would be inclined to tip less.

Second, most of the time I would probably be tipping more than 20% (do the math, round up is usually what I do) but since the button to tip without doing math is there I will always do that rather than entering a specific amount.

Of course, that data is from Square, which I have only ever seen for counter service. Do people tip 20% when you stand in line and order a coffee/tea to go? Maybe they do, but in those cases I tip between 0% and 50% depending on the service, whereas in a sitdown restaurant, service would need to be off the charts bad or good for me to go 0% or 50%

Some interesting parallels to red/blue states.

>Of course, that data is from Square...

True, but at least it's a consistent data set across all states for comparison.
