And women.  I read somewhere that in the 1700's on what was then the American western frontier (so Ohio and Kentucky) that a man could expect to have 3 wives over his lifetime because so many women died in childbirth.  It was a vicious cycle, a married couple had a lot of children in the hopes that some would survive to adulthood, but that took it's toll on the mothers.

Young couples married young, at 15 years or so, maybe younger up in the hollers.  They didn't have long lives in a frontier, agrarian society.  Life was brutal and short.

When my oldest son was a toddler, an elderly neighbour across the back lane invited us to visit him for ice cream cones. I noticed an elegant chair upholstered with a needlepoint tapestry seat cover, and commented on it. He told me that his second wife had started it, his third wife had worked on it, and his fourth wife had finished it.

He sighed and said "It's really hard to keep a good woman!"

Imagine how that prospect would contribute to frigidity!

In many cases it wasn't the actual childbirth that was fatal, it was infections that happened afterwards. Childbirth became less hazardous once we understood germ theory.

A new study revealed today here in Denmark that around 3 times as many people had the antibodies in their blood than we have positive tests results. That IS alarming and shows it's far more wide spread than we thought. On the good side, a lot of people apparently have been infected without knowing it and felt nothing.

We still can't assume that there is such thing as herd immunity.  If you look at Sweden they had a sustained drop but now they are on the rise again.  I don't think full lockdowns are the way forward, but limiting social activities, mandating masks and social distancing all seem significantly slow the spread.
