I read somewhere that in the 1700's on what was then the American western frontier (so Ohio and Kentucky) that a man could expect to have 3 wives over his lifetime because so many women died in childbirth. It was a vicious cycle, a married couple had a lot of children in the hopes that some would survive to adulthood, but that took it's toll on the mothers.
Young couples married young, at 15 years or so, maybe younger up in the hollers. They didn't have long lives in a frontier, agrarian society. Life was brutal and short.
