Title: UK: The mystery isn’t why the birth rate is falling – it’s why anyone has kids

US & UK: I'm seeing this sentiment strongly & repeatedly reflected in reddit.

But it has so far chosen not to do those things — chosen, indeed, to raise taxes on the young to protect the interests of the old. This is not an irrational way for a government elected by the grey vote to behave. By the same token, waiting much, much later to have kids is not an irrational way for the under-40s to behave either.

One of the things that galls me is old farts (i.e. increasingly my peers, by also the next older generation) talking about how selfish and lazy the millennials are, while the old farts collect all manner of government handouts that may well not be around when the young become their (our) age. My dad is always talking about how "people don't want to work anymore" and I have to point out that he has been retired for 30 years following a 38-year working career (if you don't count his childhood jobs and military service before getting out and going to college).

Of course... most of the ornery white males his age seem to be absolutely horrified at things like Canadian-style healthcare system because the one thing they know is that the government should not be involved in healthcare. It's lost on them that everyone of their generation is on Medicare or VA care or both.
