High rents aren't so bad if there's high income.

BTW, Durham sucks.

Congrats, Trav. VB is 2nd-highest.

Rents are normal here. People just don't make as much $$

I think I've heard most of those in the right column described as crappy & don't move here.

Interesting data.  I'd like to see the cost of rent & utilities as a percentage of income.  A lot of the low rent places seem like they would have high energy needs.

The least expensive city is Toledo, Ohio ($550)

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

And transportation.  A lot of those cities/states have wildly high car insurance rates. Virginia, for instance, used to have a hellatious annual car tax. Or how about Wyoming where you might find cheap rent but you have to drive 150 miles one-way to get groceries? What about child care?

It's the whole ball of wax. You can't just pick rent and say that's the problem.

How much time have you spent there?

A friend is moving from Davis to Ohio because his pay will stay the same, but his standard of living will take a big jump

It's a story I've told a few times while on Redneck ToursTM, but 30 yrs ago Louise permanently banned us from ever again entering Ohio.

I've been to Ohio once, but that was enough.  It is a miserable place.

Raleigh and surrounding [NOT Durham] areas should be explored. IMFO

Lots of speed traps in Ohio.

Don't mind me, I'm just piling on since we're beating up on Ohio.

My in-laws are in Ohio just outside of Columbus. That right there is good enough reason to never set foot in that pit of rust, misery, and despair.

You forgot 'decaying, gritty, grimy'  ...and a few other salient adjectives.

AND that describes the nicer places in Ohio.  We were around Mansfield, which is the poster child for gritty, grimy ---and that was before the rust belt had really started to implode.

Good to see Ohio's fame has spread internationally.

A year or so back there was a big Twitter thread about what states were part of the Midwest and which ones could be kicked out if need be, Ohio was at or near the top of the list.

To be fair dumping Indiana was mentioned but we just kept quiet and soon everybody went back to ignoring us like usual and beating up on Ohio and Missouri.   8)

They're buying billboards in Austin.

“We know Austin was a location that people had on their radar. We wanted to make sure that perhaps while they were in Austin looking at places, they also knew about this place called Ohio,” says Renae Scott, director of marketing and communications for JobsOhio."

Spoiler: they do.
