"Although McTeague says the price spike has its roots in a low Canadian dollar and refinery breakdowns, Vancouver was one of the first cities in Canada to proudly unveil a carbon tax that has continued to escalate year after year. McTeague recently told Vancouver radio station News 1130 that taxes on gas sold in B.C. account for 50 cents of every liter, which is the highest energy taxes in North America."

>$5 CAD in Vietnam

That sort of puts the cost in the US into perspective, by international standards our gas is still very inexpensive.  Our local gas, which is quite a bit more than most of the country is between $3.40 and $3.75.

1 UK Gallon = 1.2 US Gallons

That's 31% of the cost.

Meanwhile, in California, the excise tax rate is 41.7 cents per gallon and 2.25% sales tax. At last check, at about $2.80/gal according to Gas Buddy, it looks like it's roughly 17% of the cost.
