very sensible IMO considering gmail itself going to be serving (although is it from the google domain?) it so it could potentially bypass the SOP

Anything that could be errantly (or not) executed in the client should be zipped up, imo.

It was zipped up. Google went in and scanned the contents and said "Tut, tut, naughty, naughty"
