What is the most stupid thing you have bought
« on: February 22, 2011, 08:08:19 AM »
There is a deck of Apple playing cards from 1997 currently sitting on ebay for 303.57 (with 24 bids) and still 5 days to go - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270708361678#ht_500wt_1156

Not sure there is anyone here that would drop that kind of cash for them, but what is the most stupid thing you have laid your hard earned wad down for (other than a ticket to SES London this week).

I paid full price for an iPhone 3G. Less than a month later my carrier made them free with a contract. Then a month or so after that the iPhone 3GS came out. And I'm still stuck with the bloody 3G now two years on. If you're going to hop on Steve Jobs' bandwagon I guess it pays to pay attention to their release schedules.

I pretty much hate sports.  I picked my cable company in America purely on the fact that it had less sports channels than the others.

However, in a fit of madness, I went out and bought:

A sterling silver full-size reproduction of an American football helmet.   Hand raised, with an applied central band over the outer dome. The face guard, screws and mounts are cast and satin finished. The interior is fitted with removable leather covered pads.

The helmet is presented in a specially made fitted burgundy, gold tooled, leather bound wooden case with a silver gilt plaque in the form of an American football.

The helmet was made in 1997 by Asprey, London in their own workshops in Bond Street and is the only one of it's in the world.  The helmet weighs 147 troy ounces (the box a damn sight more).

MuWaHahahah! :)

I once in total euphoria bought the Xbox 360 from Malaysia before it came out here in Denmark. Had only malaysian keyboards, buttons etc. and the electric current was not compatible with our 220W. Blew the thing and never got around to playing until it came officially here..

Recently:

A nice hifi for my parents retirement thinking they would use it (should have known better, they never replaced the record playing "hifi" when it broke 20 years ago). I did some sly digging around and both parents seemed to be up for it, but neither of them has used it more than once in the past year (and I have checked they know how to use it) - I even loaned them about a hundred cd's that cover things they used to listen to.

Internet related:

When .me.uk was about to be released I bought .me.sc as I stupidly thought there would be enough interest in .me.uk to allow a "Scottish" version to make some cash (yes, .sc is not Scotland - it's the Seychelles) - this was before .sc became easily available so I had to do a fair amount of pursuading. Put time, effort and cash in - but no-one was interested in owning the domains (lesson learned though).
