You can no longer use the APIs in the first place unless you create a billing account and hand-over your credit card information to Google. This is applicable to all users – even those who have a simple map embedded on their website’s contact page.

As implied at the end of that article, now is the perfect opportunity for other map providers to take advantage of this.
I'm not up on maps, can OSM do the same sorts of things as Google maps?

OSM doesn't have teh whole javascript API, it's more about the map data. Mapbox.com is a commercial, but not badly priced googlemaps alternative.

I have just recently embedded a map a couple of days ago on a client site, I couldn't use any plugins because of the API block you mention but going old school and creating the map on my maps and then using googles iframe code still worked. Don't know if they will block this soon but it works currently.
