Experiences with Wibiya?
« on: March 15, 2011, 10:11:39 AM »
Hi all, I've just been having a look at Wibiya and wondered if anyone's had any experience using it?

I've read a couple of reviews praising it, but have reservations over some of the comments which claim user feedback wasn't overly positive.

We're keen to introduce more of a social element to our site and further integrate the blog, together with twitter and facebook, although I'm wondering if it would be better to intergrate these into the body of the page rather than a toolbar at the bottom which may just be dismissed.

Hi Dave,

had never even looked at it until just now, it definately looks interesting.

My gut feel is that it's great for places where getting a more tailored install of like buttons etc may be tricky, but I don't like the toolbar based look of it much personally and I'd be tempted to go with a more bespoke solution where possible, given its not exactly hard to get a button on *most* sites.  I'd be interested to see some more stats though, I can't find any comparison with wibiya -v- tailored clicks, so not sure whether the low interaction some people report is the fault of the styling, the coding or just people don't want to click 'like'!

There is a comment here saying it opens a backdoor http://www.problogger.net/archives/2010/05/27/wibiya-toolbar-first-impression-review/ - but no idea if that's substantiated!

I saw that comment too, although can't find anyone else who claims to have been hacked so am questioning whether or not the blog in question was simply running an out-of-date version of Wordpress which could be the source of her troubles.

My first thought when seeing the toolbar is it looked like some form of spammy advertising and something which sites just tag on as an after thought.

Whenever I visit a site that's using it I minimise it immediately. I see it as a pain in the arse really as I view sites largely on a small res screen so it takes up valuable screen real estate for me.

I have had positive results for my sites and client sites utilising it, visitors are using it, sharing, recommending pages, retweeting etc and the translation feature is very handy for international sites. As it displays your number of fans and followers on your site it is also useful for installing trust in the visitor.

I would set it to load after the page and combine it with on page sharing buttons as well.

Hope this helps

I think it likely depends on the audience. Younger audience with topics typical for social would probably be received well, other stuff maybe not so much. Leona, what's your take?  Is it overwhelmingly positive regardless?

I've got some sites it would likely work well on, and starting to get more into some social stuff I'll give this a try.

All of the sites I have used it on are also utilising forms of social media marketing off site to draw people in, so it already has an audience that are familiar with these sites and provides a way for them to interact with them without leaving my site. So in a way the audience that does use it is pre-qualified.

I have the welcome popup active on some of my bars, as I want to direct them to the bar, now this is slightly intrusive and is the only thing I have on there that I would think could cause a negative reaction, so I would consider leaving this off the bar for some sites. The bar if designed to fit your sites colours can also be easily overlooked (hence why on page buttons are also needed in my opinion), that in itself is indicator that the bar is not effecting user experience in a negative way. You can adapt colour, apps and placement, so you can adjust it to suit your site and audience.

It works for the sites I have installed it on, but of course the effectiveness does depend on your audience and their current usage of social media networks. My customer base is 20-65 but from the small amount of data I can gather, it has been people aged 20-45 that have used the bar to recommend pages. This is on commercial websites such as e-commerce, service based and media launch.  I would not just blindly install it on all sites though, I think it is still a judgement call.

If in doubt and you have the facility why not ask your visitors, let them tell you whether they want it or not? Social media provides a great way to interact with your audience for this kind of thing, giving you the opportunity to enhance your service excellence and plan your business strategy based on feedback received.

Hope this helps
