As someone who has gotten a free ride for about 15 years, I am amazed. I expected the free ride to end after a couple of years and every few years I look around to see what option I would go with if the new pricing was more than I was willing to pay.
My general finding was that migrating out would not be that hard or that expensive, which is why I was willing to use the service. But now that Google has announced their pricing and transition plan, it's just not worth it to me to transition. I forget the details, but I think it's $0/month through July 31, then 50% off for the first year, then starting in August, 2023, you start paying full price. That might be significantly off, but that's the basic plan.
At the bottom end, it's $6/month/account once full pricing kicks in. And an account is a login, so a single account can have multiple email aliases that all land in the same inbox (i.e. sales@, info@).
I have no sympathy for people who were caught unawares or who are whining about this change.
