What do you know about handshake domains? Anyone using them? Pitfalls?
I really like the idea and it seems like it could be a much lighter lift than P2P social networks.

Handshake is an experiment which seeks to explore those new ways in which the necessary tools to build a more decentralized internet. Services on the internet have become more centralized beginning in the 1990s, but do not fulfill the original decentralized vision of the internet. Email became Gmail, usenet became reddit, blog replies became facebook and Medium, pingbacks became twitter, squid became Cloudflare, even gnutella became The Pirate Bay. Centralization exists because there is a need to manage spam, griefing, and sockpuppet/sybil attacks. Previous decentralized systems largely stopped working due to spam. If it were more costly to grief on the internet using decentralized systems, the need for trusted centralized corporations to manage these risks decrease.

First I've read about them, but I like the idea a lot. Blockchain can act as a stand-in for a traditional registrar. I'd be interested to know how they deal with self-hosting on dynamic IPs and such.

I do too. There are some peer-to-peer server solutions based on the blockchain. I think that's coming.
That said, the server is the part of the chain I'm least worried about. I don't have a strong need to host my own. If you have all the code in a git repo and you regularly push data to a backup, your host doesn't really have much leverage over you. It's the registrar (or lack thereof) component that is really exciting to me.

What is Arweave and the Perma-Web?
Arweave is a blockchain platform with permanent on-chain storage. Arweave’s cryptocurrency called AR funds this permanent data storage. The Arweave blockchain rewards miners in AR for providing storage space in addition to computing power.
Users can store a file onto Arweave permanently by uploading it and paying an upfront one-time fee. Once that fee is paid, and the file is uploaded, no more payments have to be made, and that data will exist online, accessible forever.
This opens the door to a few possibilities. A notable one is truly decentralized applications. Decentralized applications made on Ethereum can use Ethereum as its backend, making use of Ethereum for CRUD, application logic, and financial executions. However, the frontend itself cannot be stored and delivered through Ethereum. Traditional centralized solutions are often required for delivering the frontend, introducing a single point of failure. With Arweave, a frontend can be stored and delivered through the Arweave blockchain, making decentralized applications truly decentralized, both in the backend and the frontend.
Another possibility is a cheaper alternative to hosting.
